| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Maine 8, Northeastern 4
ORONO, ME - The Northeastern Huskies lost at 14th ranked Maine on Friday night 8-4. The Huskies fall to 3-6-2, 2-4-1 in Hockey East, while Maine improves to 5-4-2, 3-1-0 in HEA. Michael Schutte (Burlington, ONT) had a pair of goals and an assist and Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, BC) had three assists to pace the Black Bear offense. Junior Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY) had a goal and two assists, freshman Jaron Herriman (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) had his first collegiate goal and an assist and senior Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) picked up two more assists to give him 20 points on the season. The game see-sawed back and forth over the first two periods with four ties and three lead changes before the Black Bears put the game away with three third period goals, including an empty-net score by Gray Shaneberger at 18:47. Mike Gilhooly (Calgary, ALB) made the start in net for the Huskies, making eight saves and allowing two goals. Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) came on in relief of Gilhooly to start the second period and made 16 stops. Matt Yeats earned the win for Maine, stopping 29 shots. Maine took a 1-0 lead at 4:15 of the first period. Kariya won the draw in the circle to the right of Gilhooly back to defenseman Paul Lynch (Peabody, MA). Lynch passed to Schutte who was to the left of Gilhooly and the junior deposited his second goal of the season. The Huskies tied the game at 11:21. Fahey raced behind the Maine net, and tried a wrap around. Yeats made the stop, but an alert Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) saw the loose puck and poked it past the goal line for his third goal in the last three games, fourth overall. Mastronardi and Fahey assisted on the play. Paul Lynch then gave Maine a 2-1 lead with his first collegiate goal. His shot from the left circle bounced off Gilhooly's shoulder and into the net at 15:12 of the first. The teams went into the first intermission with Maine holding a 2-1 lead. A total of six goals were scored in a fast-paced second period. NU went first, tying the game 2-2 on Mastronardi's second goal of the year. Fahey controlled the puck at the right point. He passed to Herriman in the circle, whose crossing pass wound up on an open Mastronardi's stick to the left of Yeats, and the junior put the puck in the open side of the net at 4:10. Just 1:16 later Maine broke the 2-2 tie. An NU turnover in its own end gave freshman Jon Jankus (Stoney Creek, ONT) open ice. He pulled up along the right side and fired a slap shot beating Braun for his first collegiate score. Up next it was NU's freshman Herriman's turn to score his first college goal. With NU on the power-play, Braun poked-checked the puck away from Kariya to Mastronardi, who fed Herriman as he broke across center ice. Herriman put on a burst of speed to brake in alone on Yeats and scored the goal at 9:15 to tie the game 3-3. NU then took its first lead of the game at 14:34 of the second. Ryan Dudgeon (Port Elgin, ONT) forced a Maine turnover in its own end and got the puck to Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) at the point. Judy then returned the puck to Dudgeon in front, who passed to an open Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) who then scored his third goal of the season. The lead, however, did not last long. Only 1:15 later, after a scramble in front of Braun, Schutte finally was able to get the puck into the net, tying the game 4-4 at 15:49 of the second. This tie did not last long either, but unfortunately for the Huskies, it was the Black Bears who scored next. Robert Liscak (Skalika, Slovakia) broke in alone on Braun. He put a fake on the NU goalie and shot the puck between Braun and the left post, reclaiming the lead, 5-4, for Maine. The score remained 5-4 entering the third period. Maine took the game's first two-goal lead just 1:31 into the final period. Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville, MA) forced a turnover in the NU end along the right boards. His centering pass created a scramble in front of the Husky net. Lucas Lawson (Braeside, ONT) was the last player to get to the puck, as he spotted it trickle behind the crowd, and behind Braun and gave it a final push into the back of the net. The scoring settled down for much of the rest of the game. Each team put 12 shots on net but the score remained 6-4 until the closing minutes. The Huskies pulled Braun with under two minutes to play. But it would be Maine that scored, as Gray Shaneberger scored the empty-net goal at 18:47 creating a three-goal cushion for the Black Bears. Dimitrakos closed out the scoring with Maine's eighth goal at 19:05. For the game, NU outshot Maine 33-32. The Huskies return to action next weekend with home games on Friday and Saturday versus ECAC foes Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Northeastern (3-6-2, 2-4-1) vs. Univ. of Maine (4-4-2, 2-1-0)
