| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 4, Clarkson 1
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern University men’s hockey team defeated Clarkson 4-1 on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Junior Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) had a goal and two assists and senior Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) had two goals for the Huskies. Freshman Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) allowed just one goal and made 26 saves in his second collegiate start. Mike Walsh (Downington, PA) had 22 stops for the Golden Knights. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 10:46 of the first period on the power-play. Ryan skated along the blueline and spotted freshman Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) at the right post. Guerriero batted Ryan’s pass into the net for his second goal of the season. NU’s lead increased to 2-0 at 10:46 of the first. Ryan broke free down the center of the ice, drawing the defense to him. He dropped the puck to Lynch moving in along the left side. Lynch picked up the puck, skated in alone on Walsh and scored his fifth goal of the season. The goal extended Lynch’s goal-scoring streak to four games. Clarkson cut the deficit in half at 7:23 of the second period. Ken Scuderi (Bethpage, NY) controlled the puck at the point and passed to an open Matt Poapst (Monkland, ONT) in front. Poapst’s quick shot beat Gibson for the goal. The score remained 2-1 NU entering the third period. The third period began with NU being outshot 18-10, but the Huskies controlled most of the play in the game’s final 20 minutes. NU outshot Clarkson in the third period 16-9. The best scoring chance of the period, however, came while the Huskies were shorthanded. With the game clock under nine minutes to play, Ryan controlled the puck coming out of the Northeastern end. He flipped it to Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) who outraced a Clarkson defender. Levesque was alone with Walsh, but the Clarkson goalie managed to make an impressive skate save to stop Levesque's scoring bid. Ryan sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:08. Arik Engbrecht (Winnipeg, MAN) passed the puck up the boards and out of the NU end to Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA). Hayward then bounced the puck off the boards to Ryan who pulled up just inside the blue line and fired a shot into the open net for his eighth goal of the season. The Huskies added another empty-net goal at 19:50. Lynch won a faceoff in the NU end, got the puck back and flipped it towards the Clarkson net, and the puck wound up going into the net. It was Lynch’s first multi-goal game since he had a hat trick at UMass-Lowell Oct. 27 of last season. With three points, Ryan now has 13 (8-5-13) in his last six games against teams from the ECAC. The Huskies are 5-1-0 in their last six contests versus ECAC teams. Northeastern will have another crack at a team from the ECAC on Saturday night when the Huskies host St. Lawrence. Clarkson will travel to Providence for a game with the Friars on Saturday night.
