| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 7, Holy Cross 2
BOSTON, MA — Northeastern scored four first period goals, including three over the final 2:28, in defeating Holy Cross 7-2 on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Seniors Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) and Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) each recorded four points, Lynch with two goals and two assists and Fahey with a career-high four assists. Eleven different Huskies recorded points with six collecting at least two. The win was Northeastern fourth consecutive victory. Over that four-game stretch, NU has outscored its opponents 18-5. It is the first time the Huskies have won four consecutive games since the 1996-97 team reeled off six straight wins. The win improved NU’s record on the season to 7-6-2 while Holy Cross falls to 7-4-2. Freshman Keni Gibson remained unbeaten on the season in goal for NU, at 4-0-0. He made 18 saves and now has a 1.50 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. Derek Cunha (New Bedford, MA) stopped 44 NU shots for the Crusaders. The Huskies fired a season high 51 shots on the Holy Cross net for the game. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 5:19 of the first when freshman Jaron Herriman (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) knocked in a rebound of a Lynch shot for his second goal of the season. Despite keeping majority of the play in the Holy Cross end, the score remained just 1-0 until 17:42 when Fahey broke across center ice and passed to his right to Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA), who then fired a slap shot from the face-off circle for the goal. Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) also assisted on the play. Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) put NU on top 3-0 with his team-leading 11th goal of the season at 19:12 and Joe Mastronardi scored the Huskies fourth goal of the first period at 19:44. NU outshot Holy Cross 21-2 in the first. It was the fourth straight game that Ryan has scored a goal. NU increased its lead to 5-0 at 16:00 on a blast from the point by Arik Engbrecht (Winnipeg, MAN). It was Engbrecht’s first goal of his senior season. Holy Cross finally cracked the scoreboard on their first power-play. Patrick Rissmiller (Belmont, MA) fired a slap shot from the right point past Gibson at 19:05. It was the first power-play goal allowed by NU in its last five games. The Huskies struck right back, when Lynch scored a power-play goal of his own at 19:49. The Crusaders scored their second goal of the game at 15:39 of the third on a R.J. Irving (Marlboro, MA) shot off assists from Tim and Tony Coskren (Walpole, MA). Lynch scored NU’s final goal of the game, on the power-play, at 18:02 off assists from Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) and Fahey. Northeastern head coach Bruce Crowder was not at the game as he is in Essex, ONT for the funeral of his mother who passed away on Wednesday. It is the first game Crowder has missed in his 10-year coaching career. Assistant coach Jamie Rice filled in for Crowder for the Huskies. Northeastern next plays a week from tomorrow at Merrimack.
