North Andover, Mass. — Alex Sikatchev (St. Petersburg, Russia) netted the game-winner at 1:26 of the third period as Merrimack (6-9-0, 2-6-0) pulled out a 2-1 win over Northeastern (7-7-2, 2-5-1). Joe Exter (Cranston, RI) made 30 saves as the Warriors took the Hockey East battle in front of 1,456 at the Volpe Center. Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) scored the lone goal for the visiting Huskies.
Nick Parillo (Niskayuna, NY) fed Sikatchev just past mid-ice, creating a breakaway opportunity for the junior forward. Sikatchev kept the puck on his stick until he came to a complete stop on the right side of goaltender Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT). He then squirted the puck through Gibson for his eighth goal of the season.
After a scoreless first period in which Northeastern held a 10-8 advantage in shots, Merrimack got on the board at the beginning of the second period. Ryan Cordeiro (Somerset, MA) poked the puck to Marco Rosa (Whitby, ONT), who immediately made a nifty move to slip by a Northeastern defenseman. He then carried the puck across the front of the net and beat Gibson for his fourth goal of the season. The Huskies answered at the 9:28 mark of the middle period, two seconds after their second power play ended. From behind the net, Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) fed Hayward in front and he lifted the puck high, beating Exter on his glove side.
Northeastern outshot Merrimack 31-26 for the game. Gibson made 26 saves as the Huskies' win streak was stopped at four games. Merrimack went 0-for-2 on the power play while Northeastern was scoreless in three power play attempts.
