| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 7, Iona 2
BOSTON, MA — Northeastern scored four first period goals and went on to a 7-2 victory over Iona on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The Huskies improve to 8-7-2 on the season while Iona drops to 6-8-1. It was NU’s fifth win in its last six games, as the Huskies have allowed only nine goals over that span. The nine goals allowed in the last six games is an NU record for fewest goals allowed during a six-game stretch. NU also improves to 6-1-1 on the season at Matthews Arena. It was the first time an Iona men’s hockey team has ever played a team from Hockey East. NU has now defeated three teams this season from the MAAC, defeating Mercyhurst 5-2 and Holy Cross 7-2 earlier in the season. The Huskies are 6-2-1 in non-conference games this season, 6-0-1 in their last seven. Freshman Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) improved his record to 5-1-0 on the season stopping 16 of 18 shots he faced. Gibson has not allowed more than two goals in any of his starts this season. Senior Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) tied a career-high with four points with a goal and three assist. It is the third time in his career that Lynch has recorded four points. Four other players had two points for the Huskies. Of the 18 skaters for the Huskies, 14 recorded at least one point. NU took control of the game early, as Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) scored at 1:25 of the first, followed by a goal by Jon Awe (Memphis, TN) at 1:55. The Huskies added two more goals later in the period when sophomore Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) scored his first collegiate goal at 16:31 and then 20 seconds later sophomore Scott Selig (Duxbury, MA) scored to put NU on top 4-0. The Huskies added to their lead at 7:09 of the second period when Lynch set up Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) for his fifth goal of the season. Iona got on the board at 16:15 on a power-play goal by Kelly Bararyk (Moose Jaw, SASK). Then just six seconds after a power—play opportunity had ended, Iona struck again with its second goal of the game off the stick of Rob Kellogg (Baldwin, MO) at 18:51. The teams went into the second intermission with the Huskies ahead 5-2. Northeastern scored two goals early in the third to complete the scoring. Ryan scored on the power-play just 30 seconds into the final period and Lynch scored his ninth of the season at 1:57. For Ryan, it was his third mutli-goal game of the season and the ninth of his career. With four points on the night Lynch now has 19 (9-10-19) on the season, surpassing his output from all of last season. Mike Fraser (Brandon, MAN) started in goal for the Gaels, making five saves and allowing four goals. He was replaced by Scott Galenza (Camrose, ALB) at 16:51 of the first. Galenza made 14 stops. Northeastern next plays on Saturday Dec. 29 at Union.
