| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Union 5, Northeastern 3
SCHENECTADY, NY - The Northeastern men's hockey team lost at Union on Saturday night 5-3. It was NU's first non-conference loss in its last eight non-conference games. The Huskies had only allowed six goals in their previous three games before giving up five tonight. Union got on the board first at 2:33 of the first period. Union's Marc Neron (Moonbeam, ONT) skated in on the NU net along with teammate Brent Booth (Calgary, ALB). Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) picked up Neron and played him for the shot. Unfortunately for the Huskies so did goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT). Neron instead passed off to Booth who easily converted the goal, the first of his collegiate career. It was the first first-period goal allowed by the Huskies since surrendering a goal in the first 20 minutes at Princeton Nov. 27, four games ago. The Huskies would even the score at 5:09 on the power-play. Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) had the puck at the right point and passed to Fahey at the left point. Fahey's one-timer beat Brandon Snee (Philadelphia, PA) for the goal. It was Fahey's ninth of the season and his seventh power-play goal of the year. It was the first goal for Fahey since he scored versus Providence Nov. 10. The Dutchmen reclaimed the lead at 10:42. Nathan Gillies (Cambridge, ONT) put a shot on net. Gibson stopped it and then went to clear it out with his stick. Gibson failed to control the puck and Gillies was able to poke the puck into the net. Union added to its lead just one minute into the second period. Jason Kean's (Nanaimo, BC) shot from the right circle trickled through the pads of Gibson for his third goal of the season. NU trimmed the deficit to 3-2 two minutes later while on the power-play. Judy passed to Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) along the left boards. Ryan brought the puck behind the goal-line and made a great pass to Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) cutting in front, who scored his third goal of the season. With the assist, Ryan tied a personal-best seven-game point streak. It is the junior's second seven-game point streak of the season. The momentum however, quickly swung back to the Dutchmen. With Fahey in the penalty box for hitting after the whistle Union was able to take advantage. Charles Simard (Aylmer, QUE) skated over the blue line, stopped and fired a blast that beat Gibson glove side for the 4-2 Union lead at 9:40. Following Union's fourth goal, NU brought in Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) to replace Gibson. Gibson had played nearly 270 consecutive minutes in goal for the Huskies. Prior to tonight, Gibson had not allowed more than two goals in any of his first six career starts. After killing off an NU power-play chance, Union increased the lead to 5-2 early in the third period. Kris Goodman (Calgary, ALB) picked off an attempted clearing pass in the NU zone. Goodman passed to Doug Christiansen (Elm Grove, WI) who was skating down the center and scored the goal at 2:51. The Huskies made it interesting with a power-play goal at 5:28. Guerriero was able to redirect a Fahey shot from the point past Snee. It was Guerriero's first career two-goal game. Gibson made 8 saves and allowed four goals. Braun in relief allowed just the one goal, making 9 saves. Snee had 28 stops in the win for Union. The loss was the first for NU this season against an ECAC team. The Huskies had been 3-0-0 this season against the ECAC outscoring those teams by a combined 11-3. The Huskies will return to action on Friday night Jan. 4 at home versus Boston University. Northeastern (8-8-2, 2-5-1 HEA) vs. Union College (5-5-3, 1-3-1 ECAC)
