BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team lost to Boston University Friday night 3-2 in front of a season-high 4372 fans at Matthews Arena. BU’s senior co-captain Mike Pandolfo (Burlington, MA) scored a pair of goals and Justin Maiser (Edina, MN) had a goal and two assists. For the Huskies, senior assistant captain Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) had a goal and an assist and freshman Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) tied a career-high with 30 saves. With the win BU improves to 12-4-1, 5-2-1 in Hockey East while Northeastern falls to 8-9-2, 2-6-1 in Hockey East. It is just the second time all season that NU has lost at Matthews. Northeastern is now 6-2-1 at Matthews this season. It was the fourth consecutive meeting between Northeastern and Boston University that was decided by one-goal. Of the last 17 games between NU and BU, there has been one tie, nine one-goal games, four two-goal games and three three-goal games. NU had a great chance to get on the scoreboard first with a power-play opportunity just 34 seconds into the game. But the BU defense did not allow the Huskies a shot. In fact, NU did not manage a shot on goal until over seven minutes into the game. However, Boston University didn’t get a shot on net until almost nine minutes had passed. The Terriers did get on the scoreboard first, just 17 seconds into their first power-play opportunity. Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH) put a shot on net and the rebound came out to Maiser. The freshman forward passed to Pandolfo who converted his 13th tally of the season at 14:16. The game went into the first intermission with BU ahead 1-0. BU added to its lead at 15:21 of the second when Pandolfo finished off a scramble in front of Gibson for the goal. It was Pandolfo’s third two-goal game of the season. The Huskies got back into the game at 17:00 on Lynch’s 10th goal of the season. The senior took the puck along the boards and put a shot on net that got past BU goalie Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALB). With the second period winding down BU was able to add to its lead. Brian McConnell (Norfolk, MA) blocked an NU pass and got the puck to Maiser, who broke in alone on Gibson, and scored his second goal of the season at 19:13. Northeastern cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third period at 11:43. Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) put a shot on net that came out to Lynch in front. Lynch slid the puck to Jared Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) and the freshman stuffed it past Fields for his second goal of the year. For Lynch it was his seventh multi-point game of the season and his third consecutive. He now has 12 points (4-8-12) in his last five games. Fields earned his 10th win of the season in net for the Terriers, stopping 19 Northeastern shots. The same two teams will meet on Sunday at Walter Brown Arena in a game to be televised on Fox Sports New England at 3 p.m. Boston University (12-4-1, 6-2-1 HEA) vs. Northeastern (8-9-2, 2-6-1 HEA)
