BOSTON, MA - Freshman Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) stopped all 38 shots he faced for his first career shutout, as Northeastern defeated seventh-ranked Boston University 3-0 at Walter Brown Arena on Sunday afternoon. It was NU's first ever shutout of the Terriers in 175 all-time meetings dating back to the 1930-31 season. Seniors Arik Engbrecht (Winnipeg, MAN) and Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) and junior Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) each had a goal and assist to provide the offense for NU. The 3-0 NU win ended a string of one-goal games between the Huskies and Terriers, as four consecutive games between the two schools had been decided by just one goal. Gibson was spectacular all game, making 11 saves in the first period, 14 in the second and 13 in the fourth. His best save of the game may have come with just 3:32 left in the first period. BU's Kenny Magowan (Kelowna, BC) broke in on a two-on-one with teammate Gregg Johnson (Windsor, CT). Magowan came in on Gibson's right side and slid the puck to Johnson who appeared to have a clear shot. But Gibson made a spectacular kick save to deflect the puck to safety. With the game tied 0-0 in the second period, the Terriers had a great opportunity to crack the scoreboard first. Between 6:37 and 12:04, NU was whistled for five penalties, giving BU five power-play chances and a total of 2:15 of a 5-on-3 advantage. But the combination of Gibson's play and NU's tenacious penalty-kill kept the Terriers off the scoreboard. Less than two minutes after killing off the final penalty, the Huskies scored the game's first goal. Levesque controlled the puck in front of the BU net. He passed out to Engbrecht at the point, who put a shot on net. With Levesque screening in front, the puck was able to get by Terrier goalie Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) at 16:03. It was Engbrecht's second goal of his senior season. The teams began the third period with NU ahead 1-0. The Huskies got an insurance goal just 3:44 into the final period. Sophomore Scott Selig (Duxbury, MA) put a shot on net from in front. Tapp made the initial save but the puck came right to Ryan at the left post, who stuffed in the rebound for his 14th of the season. NU's final goal came at 12:36 of the third while on the power-play. Engbrecht put a shot on net from the right point and Levesque deflected it past Tapp for his fourth of the year. With the win, NU improves to 9-9-2, 3-6-1 in Hockey East while the Terriers drop to 12-5-1, 6-3-1 in Hockey East. The last NU shutout was a scoreless tie last season against Boston College (Dec. 6, 2000). The last time the Terriers were shutout was Oct. 16, 1999, 3-0 by Niagara. The last time BU was shutout at Walter Brown Arena was Feb. 19, 1994 by Maine in a scoreless tie. Tapp finished the game with 18 saves. Northeastern next plays Maine on Friday Jan. 11 at Matthews Arena.
