BOSTON, MA — Chris Lynch, of Duxbury, Mass., scored an overtime goal to lift the Northeastern Huskies over visiting 11th-ranked Maine 2-1 Friday night at Matthews Arena.
The win improves NU’s record to 10-9-2 on the season, 4-6-1 in Hockey East, while Maine falls to 11-7-3 and 5-3-1 in Hockey East. Lynch had a goal and an assist and freshman Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) had a pair of assists for the Huskies.
NU dominated overtime, outshooting the Black Bears 5-0, with senior captain Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) putting three of those shots on net. At 1:28 of the extra period, Maine’s Francis Nault (Tracy, QUE) was whistled for holding, putting the Huskies on the power-play. NU converted 1:03 into the power-play when Guerriero found Lynch open in front at the right slot, and the senior scored his 11th of the season. It was Lynch’s eighth multi-point game of the season.
Following a scoreless first period, Maine got on the board first. Just one second after a power-play chance had ended for the Black Bears, Prestin Ryan (Arcola, SASK) scored on a blast from the right point off assists from Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville, MA) and Nault. It was Ryan’s fourth goal of the year. Northeastern came back and tied the game less than two minutes later. On the power-play, Guerriero controlled the puck behind the Maine net and passed to Ryan in the left slot. Ryan then beat Maine goalie Mike Morrison (Medford, MA) stick side up top for his team-leading 15th goal of the season at 2:31.
The Huskies outshot Maine 11-7 in the third period and had a pair of power-play chances, but neither team was able to score, forcing overtime.
NU’s freshman goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) stopped 24 of 25 shots he faced to earn his seventh win of the season. Gibson has now allowed only four goals in his last three starts. Morrison made 33 saves as the senior was dealt only his second defeat of the year against eight wins. Gibson and Morrison entered the game with respectively the ninth and 10th best goals against averages in the country (2.01 and 2.07).
The Black Bears came into tonight’s action as the fourth highest scoring offense in the nation averaging 4.45 goals a game and had scored at least three goals in 11 of their last 12 games.
It was Northeastern’s first win over Maine since a 6-3 victory at Matthews Dec. 4, 1999. The Huskies were 0-4-2 versus Maine over that stretch. NU is now 3-0-1 in its last four against Maine at Matthews Arena.
The same two teams will battle again on Saturday night at Matthews.
