| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Maine 2 (OT)
BOSTON, MA — Northeastern and Maine skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Matthews Arena in a Hockey East contest. Northeastern is now 10-9-3, 4-6-2 in Hockey East on the season and Maine is 11-7-4, 5-3-2 in Hockey East. For the game, the Black Bears outshot NU 41-38. Husky goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) made a career-high 39 saves while Maine goaltender Mike Morrison (Medford, MA) stopped 36 shots. The Huskies defeated Maine 2-1 in overtime on Friday night at Matthews. Northeastern appeared to take an early 1-0 lead just 4:35 into the game when Jared Mudryk’s(Leduc, ALB) shot from the left post found the back of the net. But the goal was disallowed as the official ruled an NU player was in the crease. Maine score first, with only two seconds left in the period. Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, NJ) found Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, MA) as the senior defenseman was cutting to the net, and Metcalf quickly returned fire on the NU goal for his third score of the season. The Huskies tied the game early in the second period with a goal from one of their defensemen. Trevor Reschny (Macklin, SASK) took a nice feed from Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) off the left boards and skated in on Morrison. Reschny’s shot was saved and deflected to the right by Morrison. But freshman defenseman Tim Judy (Bowie, MA) skated in and redirected the puck past Morrison for his second goal of the season at 1:31. The Black Bears then went ahead 2-1 at 11:57 on a goal by sophomore forward Todd Jackson (Corltand, NY) from Metcalf and Shaneberger. It was Jackson’s fifth of the season. NU would tie the game in the final minute of the second period. Again Reschny put a shot on net that was saved, but senior defenseman Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) was in position for the rebound, and chipped the puck into the upper portion of the net past a diving Morrison at 19:39. It was Fahey’s 10th goal of the season. With that goal, Fahey becomes the first NU defenseman since Dan McGillis in 1995-96 to record at least 10 goals in a season. Each team had several great chances to take the 3-2 lead in the third, but despite 22 shots in the final period, neither team was able to score. One of NU’s best chances came at about the midway point of the period when Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) cut across the ice and fired a wrist shot that beat Morrison but clanged off the post. Maine had a great chance when Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, BC) moved in alone on Gibson, but the freshman was able to make the glove save. NU had a power-play chance at 17:26 of the third but could not capitalize and then Maine had a power-play opportunity at 19:29 of the third that carried into the overtime, but also could not score. Northeastern is now 3-0-2 in its last five versus the Black Bears at Matthews Arena. The teams split the season series, 1-1-1. The Black Bears entered this weekend as the fourth highest scoring offense in the nation, but were limited to only three goals in nearly 130 minutes of hockey. NU next plays on Friday night Jan. 18 at home versus UMass-Lowell.
