| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, UMass-Lowell 3
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team defeated third-ranked UMass Lowell Friday night 5-3 in front of 2,514 fans at Matthews Arena. It extends NU’s unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), all coming against ranked teams. Northeastern is now 11-9-3, 5-6-3 in Hockey East while Lowell drops to 16-4-1, 8-3-1 in Hockey East. The Huskies trailed 3-2 entering the third period and had been 0-6-1 on the season when trailing after two. But NU quickly tied the game just 1:58 into the third. Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) won a faceoff in the Lowel zone back to Jon Awe (Memphis, TN) at the point. Awe put a shot on net that was stopped by UML goalie Jimi St. John (Windsor, ONT). But the rebound bounced directly to Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) who redirected the puck into the net for his fourth score of the season. NU took the lead less than a minute later. Freshman Jared Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) took a pass from Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) and raced up the right boards. Mudryk broke towards the UML goal, around a defender, and fired a wrist shot beating St. John to give the Huskies the lead at 2:44. The River Hawks had a great opportunity to tie the game midway through the final period. Ed McGrane (Hamilton, ONT) and Geoff Schomogyi (Kitchner, ONT) were on a two-on-one. McGrane slid the puck to Schomogyi, who had the left side of the net open. But his one-timer clanged off the post. UML would have another chance in the closing minutes when Ortlip was whistled for high-sticking at 17:24. The River Hawks pulled St. John for a 6x4 advantage. UML put two shots on net, with the second being covered up by NU goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT). On the ensuing faceoff, Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) won the draw back to Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) in the NU end. The defenseman banked the puck off the boards and into the Lowell net for his 11th goal of the season and his first career shorthanded goal. Gibson finished the game with 22 saves, while St. John made 26. The Huskies dominated the first period, outshooting the River Hawks 11-4, and taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) scored the first NU goal on the power-play at 7:59. Lynch and Fahey assisted on the play. The Huskies added to their lead at 15:32 on a goal by Tudrick, who scored on a slap shot from the left face off circle. UML turned the tables on the Huskies in the second period, as the River Hawks controlled the second period, scoring three times to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. UML did all of its scoring in a 6:26 span in the second period. At 3:49, Peter Hay (Abbotsford, BC) scored his fourth of the season. He had the puck alone in front, and wrapped it around Gibson glove side. UML tied the game at 6:14 on a slap shot by McGrane, his 12th of the year, on the power-play. The River Hawks took the lead 3-2 at 10:15. Anders Strome (Winnipeg, MAN) passed to Schomogyi, who skated in alone on Gibson and scored his fourth of the year. With two points, Fahey now has 30 on the season (11-19-30), becoming the first NU defenseman since Dan McGillis in 1995-96 to have at least 30 on the season. McGillis had a 12-24-36 line that season. The same two teams will play again on Sunday night at Lowell’s Tsongas Arena.
