BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team defeated UMass-Amherst Friday night 3-2 in front of 2607 fans at Matthews Arena. The win improves NU’s record to 13-9-3, 7-6-2 in Hockey East while UMass-Amherst drops to 7-17-1, 2-12-1 in Hockey East. The Huskies are now on a six-game unbeaten streak, with a 6-0-1 record during that stretch, and have won three straight. Northeastern is 10-3-1 in its last 14 games while UMass-Amherst is 1-11-1 in its last 13. Four of the five goals in the game were scored by players notching their first goals of the season. With the game tied 2-2 late in the third period, NU’s Trevor Reschny (Macklin, Sask.) scored the game-winning goal. Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) took the puck along the right boards and passed to linemate Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA). Hayward passed to Reschny who fired a shot on net. The shot was stopped by Minuteman goalie Mike Johnson (Excelsior, MN) initially. But the three NU forwards all rushed the net and Johnson fell backwards as the puck came loose and went past the goal line at 16:41. It was Reschny’s first goal of the season. Northeastern is now 5-0-2 in its last seven against Massachusetts at Matthews Arena and 19-2-2 all-time. NU leads the all-time seires 25-9-7. UMass got on the scoreboard first when J.R. Zavisza (Suffield, CT) scored at 8:10 of the first period. Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, MA) had the puck behind the net after a wide shot by Randy Drohan (Mississauga, ONT). Callahan fed Zavisza on the doorstep who scored his first goal of the season. The Huskies tied the game at 13:21 of the first. Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) won a faceoff to the left of Johnson back to Bryan Nathe (Elk River, MN) at the right point. Nathe crossed the puck to Donny Grover (Rockland, MA) whose one-timer beat Johnson. It was Grover’s first career goal. NU took the lead at 8:55 of the second period. Jared Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) dropped the puck for Lynch who blasted a wrist shot past Johnson for his 12th goal of the season. UMass tied the game at 15:33 on the power-play. John Hanson (Medford, MA), playing his first collegiate game, scored on a wrist shot from the left slot. Tim Vitek (Dresden, ONT) and Thomas Pock (Klagenfurt, Austria) assisted on the play. For the game, Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) made 20 saves to earn his 10th win of the season. Gibson is just the fourth Husky freshman goaltender to reach double-figures in victories. He was making his 12th consecutive start of the season. Johnson made 22 stops for Massachusetts. The same two teams will battle again on Saturday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
