| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Massachusetts 4, Northeastern 3 (OT)
AMHERST, MA - Northeastern saw its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday night with a 4-3 overtime defeat to Massachusetts at the Mullins Center. The Huskies led 3-0 in the third period but UMass scored three times in the final nine minutes of the third and added the game-winner in overtime. Freshman Jaron Herriman (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) led the way for the Huskies with his first career three-point game on a pair of goals and an assist. Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, QUE) and Thomas Pock (Klagenfurt, Austria) each had a goal and an assist for Massachusetts. Pock had the game-winner. He blocked an NU pass and raced the length of the ice on a two on one. Pock kept it the entire way as Jon Awe (Memphis, TN) played him for the pass. Pock pulled up and blasted a wrist shot past Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) for the game-winning goal at 1:21 of OT. Northeastern entered the game on a three-game winning streak. NU drops to 13-10-3, 7-7-2 in Hockey East while UMass improves to 8-17-1, 3-12-1 in Hockey East. UMass's last Hockey East win was also over Northeastern, 4-2 on Nov. 3. Gibson finished the game with 14 saves while Mike Johnson (Excelsior, MN) had 26 stops for UMass. The loss was the first time the Huskies had lost an overtime game since a 3-2 defeat at Merrimack Feb. 19, 2000. NU had been 3-0-6 in its last nine overtime games. It was also just the second time in the last 39 times that the Huskies had lost a game when leading after two periods. The Huskies had a pair of great chances to get on the board in the opening moments of the first period. In the game's first four minutes, both Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) and Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) had breakaway attempts. Hayward's shot however went wide, while Lynch's was saved. NU eventually got on the board at 7:44 on the power-play. Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) brought the puck over the blueline and passed to Herriman along the far boards. Herriman immediately noticed Scott Selig (Duxbury, MA) breaking to the net in the center and passed to his linemate. Selig quickly redirected the puck into the net for his third goal of the season. NU added to its lead 2:21 into the second period. Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY) won a faceoff to the left of Johnson back to Herriman along the boards. The sophomore swooped in front of Johnson and wrapped the puck around the UMass goalie glove side for his fourth goal of the season. NU has now scored the game's first goal 12 times this season and in each game the Huskies also have scored the game's next goal. Herriman added his second goal of the night in the third period when he took a pass from Mastronardi in front and beat Johnson stick side. But NU's third goal seemed to awake Massachusetts. The Minutemen cut the lead to 3-1 at 8:27. Kelly Sickavish (North Vancouver, BC) ripped a slapshot past Gibson from the point for his first goal of the season. Justin Rafferty (Clifton Park, NY) and Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, MA) assisted on the play. The Minutemen cut the margin to one goal at 15:44 on a goal by Kuiper on a wrist shot off assists by Craig MacDonald (Canton, MA) and Pock. Kuiper nearly tied the game a few minutes later when his blast from the point got past Gibson but banged off the post. But at 19:04 Massachusetts did get the equalizer when Toni Soderholm's (Helsinki, Finland) blast from between the circles beat Gibson. Kuiper and Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the play. The Huskies return to action on Friday night with a home game against Providence. Northeastern (13-10-3, 7-7-2) vs. UMass Amherst (8-17-1, 3-12-1)
