| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Providence 2
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team defeated Providence 3-2 on Friday night in front of 2711 fans at Matthews Arena. With the victory, Northeastern takes the season series from the Friars for the first time since the 1998-99 season. NU improves to 14-10-3, 8-7-2 in Hockey East while Providence drops to 12-13-3, 7-8-1 in Hockey East. The Huskies are 10-2-2 on the season at home. Freshman goaltender Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) made 23 saves to pick up his 11th win of the season. Gibson tied Husky Hall of Famer Bruce Racine for the most wins ever by a Northeastern freshman goalie. It is the 12th time this season in 16 starts that Gibson has allowed two goals or fewer. Providence’s Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, SASK) made 35 saves as NU outshot Providence 38-25 for the game. In the Huskies’ last four games against Providence, NU has averaged 41.0 shots per game. Northeastern got on the scoreboard first at 5:19 of the first period while on the power-play. Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) took a pass from Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) in between the faceoff circles and fired a slapshot past Schaefer. It was Guerriero’s seventh goal of the season. Providence tied the game later in the first at 18:11. Doug Wright (Kamsack, SASK) tipped in a Michael Lucci (Parma, OH) shot for his fourth goal of the year. It was the first time all season that NU had scored the first goal in a game and not scored the second goal. In the second period, NU regained the lead at 3:44. Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) fed Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) in the left slot, and Lynch’s backhand beat Schaefer. For Lynch, it was his 13th goal of the year. The Huskies added to their lead at 11:25 of the second. Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) took the puck in front of Gibson and passed up ice to Mike Ryan (Milton, MA), as Ryan raced across the blueline. The junior broke in alone on Schaefer and was able to send home his team-leading 17th goal of the year. After the Huskies were whistled for too many men on the ice, Providence took advantage of the power-play situation. At 17:20, Lucci knocked in a Jon DiSalvatore (Windsor, CT) shot for his fifth goal of the year. In the third period, NU outshot Providence 13-8 but neither team was able to score. With Schaefer out of the net, the Friars had several quality scoring chances, but Gibson came up with some difficult saves. With 20 seconds left in the game, Gibson made a save that deflected to Peter Fregoe (Massena, NY) as the senior’s momentum was taking him behind the NU net. Fregoe was able to put a shot on net but it hit the post and deflected out. Earlier in the season, Northeastern defeated the Friars 3-1 in Providence and lost to PC 5-3 in Boston. The Huskies have now won four straight games played on Friday night and six of the last seven. Northeastern returns to action on Monday night against Harvard in the opening round of the 50th annual Beanpot.
