| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Harvard 2
BOSTON, MA - Northeastern defeated Harvard 5-2 in the first round of the 50th annual Beanpot on Monday at the FleetCenter to advance to next Monday's championship game. NU will play Boston University in the championship game as the Huskies make an appearance in the final for the first time since 1999. The Huskies last won the Beanpot in 1988. Junior Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) led the way with his third career hat trick, scoring a pair a power-play goals. Ryan now has 20 goals on the season to become the first Husky to net 20 since Todd Barclay did it in 1997-98. Freshman Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) set a career-high with three assists, assisting on all three of Ryan's goals. Freshman Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) made 22 saves to earn the win. Gibson picked up his 12th win of the year to establish a new NU record for victories by a freshman goaltender, breaking Bruce Racine's record of 11 set in 1984-85. Northeastern got on the board first at 9:24 of the first period while on the power-play. Gibson played the puck along the boards to Guerriero who fed Ryan at center ice. Ryan streaked past a Harvard defender, shot-faked on the goalie, and sent home his 18th of the year. The teams went into the first intermission with NU ahead 1-0. The Crimson tied the score at 3:25 of the second. Tom Cavanaugh (Warwick, RI) had the puck behind the NU net. His centering pass deflected off an NU defender's skate and right to Brendan Bernakevitch (Regina, SASK) in front who easily sent home his second goal of the year. Northeastern regained the lead at 9:19. Jared Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) took the puck across the end line and passed back to Ryan Dudgeon (Port Elgin, ONT) whose wrist shot found the back of the net. NU took a 3-1 lead at 15:44 on the power-play. Arik Engbrecht (Winnipeg, MAN) had the puck on the right side and sent a diagonal pass toward the net to Jaron Herriman (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT). Herriman then passed to Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) in front. Ortlip's initial shot was saved but he knocked in the rebound. With the goal, Ortlip extended his point streak to six games. In the third, Ryan scored a pair of goals to put the game away. At 8:36, he took a pass from Guerriero and skated in alone on the Harvard net. Ryan waited for Harvard goalie Dov Grumet-Morris (Evanston, IL) to commit himself, and then sent home his second of the night. Ryan's third goal came at 12:01 while on the power-play. Guerriero had the puck behind the Harvard net and began to skate to his left. But he quickly passed backwards to Ryan wide open in the slot, who scored his third of the night to put NU on top 5-1. Harvard scored at 13:06 on a goal by Kenny Turano (Valley Stream, NY) . Northeastern has now won three straight first round games against Harvard. The Huskies have scored 13 goals in their last two Beanpot games, both against Harvard. For the game, NU outshot Harvard 27-24. Grumet-Morris had 22 stops. Before NU takes on Boston University next Monday, the Huskies will play Merrimack on Friday at home.
