| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Mercyhurst 2
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern University men’s hockey team defeated Mercyhurst in the home-opener for the Huskies Friday night at Matthews Arena 5-2. It was the sixth straight season that NU won its season opener. The Huskies overcame a 2-1 deficit in the second period and outscored the Lakers 4-0 over the game’s final two periods. Freshman Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) scored his first collegiate goal and added two assists. Senior Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) had a pair of goals, Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) had a goal and an assist and Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) had a pair of assists for the Huskies. For the Lakers Rich Hansen (Northport, NY) had his first career goal and Matt Cifelli (Toronto, ONT) made 44 saves in net. Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT), making his first collegiate start, made 17 saves in picking up his first career victory. Gibson is the first goalie to start a game in goal for Northeastern other than Jason Braun or Mike Gilhooly since Dan Calore started at New Hampshire Feb. 19, 1999, 79 games ago. He is the first NU goalie other than Braun or Gilhooly to pick up a win in net since Scott Sutton earned the victory against Boston College (5-4 OT) Nov. 13, 1998, 102 games ago. Braun is a senior on this year’s team and Gilhooly is a junior. NU outshot the Lakers 49-19 for the game. The Huskies were 3-7 on the power-play, and now have scored five of their seven goals this season on the power-play. The visiting Lakers got on the board first, when Louis Goulet (Kapuskasing, ONT) got the puck behind the NU net and fed Mike Carter (Cambridge, ONT) in front for the goal at 13:00 of the first period. It was a shorthanded goal. The Huskies tied the game just 58 seconds later on the power-play at 13:58 of the opening period on Scott Selig’s (Duxbury, MA) first goal of the season off assists from Guerriero and Ortlip. But the Lakers reclaimed the lead before the end of the period on Hansen’s power-play goal at 18:09. The Huskies however, would dominate the final two periods, outshooting Mercyhurst 30-12, and outscoring them 4-0. Levesque tied the game on the power-play at 6:59. Fahey put a shot on net from the point that was deflected by Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) in front. Cifelli got a stick on Lynch’s deflection but Levesque was stationed to the left of the net and deposited the rebound in the net for his first goal of the season. NU took the lead for good at 15:13 of the second. On the power-play, Guerriero passed to Fahey who was heading towards the net, and the senior captain scored his second goal of the season. In the third period, Guerriero gave the Huskies some insurance with an even-strength goal off a pass from Ortlip at 5:16. Levesque added NU’s final goal of the game, at 9:55 with an assist from Lynch. It was the first ever meeting between Northeastern and Mercyhurst. NU’s head coach Bruce Crowder has now never lost a home opener in his six seasons at Northeastern. The Huskies are 13-2 in their last 15 games when scoring at least four goals and have not lost in their last 28 games when leading after two periods (24-0-4). Northeastern is back in action on Saturday night at home versus Boston College.
