| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Boston University 5, Northeastern 3
Boston University won the 50th annual Beanpot in dramatic fashion over Northeastern, 5-3 at the FleetCenter on Monday night. Justin Maiser (Edina, MN) scored the game-winning goal at 18:48 of the third period, his second goal of the game, to put BU on top 4-3. Kenny Magowan (Kelowna, BC) had the puck behind the Husky net and found Maiser as the freshman cut to the goal. Maiser beat NU rookie goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) for the go-ahead goal. Jack Baker added an empty-net tally with three seconds left to provide the final two-goal cushion. NU had a 3-2 lead heading into the final period after captain Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) put the Huskies ahead with 10 seconds left in the second period. Mike Pandolfo (Burlington, MA) quickly tied the game for the Terriers, making it 3-3 at 3:54 of the final frame. BU went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. After a Husky turnover in their own end, David Klema (Roseau, MN) fed Maiser, whose wrist shot from the right slot beat Gibson at 7:52. The Terriers had a number of quality scoring chances in the opening period, but Gibson came up with several big saves, totaling 13 in the period. The Terriers added to their lead at 4:47 of the second period. Ryan Whitney (Scituate, MA) took the puck along the left boards and moved in front, scoring glove side for his fourth goal of the year. Momentum began to swing in Northeastern's direction when at 11:47 of the second period Mark Mullen (Dorchester, MA) was whistled for hooking, giving NU a power-play chance. The Huskies cut the lead in half at 12:37 on just their second shot of the period. Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) won a faceoff back to Fahey at the left point. Lynch then positioned himself in front of the BU net and deflected Fahey's shot past Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALB) for his 15th goal of the year. NU tied the game less than two minutes later, again on the power-play. Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) had the puck in the right faceoff circle and passed to Lynch cutting to the net. Lynch put a shot on net that was stopped by Fields between his pads. But Lynch was able to get another crack at it and stuffed it past Fields. It was Lynch's third two-goal game of the season. The Huskies then took the lead with only 10 seconds left in the middle period. Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) poked the puck away from a BU player to Fahey who skated across the blueline, pulled up from about 50 feet away and fired a slapshot that Fields slowed down but it went through the five-hole for the captain's 13th goal of the season. The Terriers tied the game at 3:54 of the third period while on the power-play. Bryan Miller (Wayne, NJ) threw the puck off the boards and it bounced in front to Pandolfo whose shot beat Gibson to knot the score 3-3. Northeastern had a great chance to take the go-ahead goal with seven minutes remaining. Fields came out of the net and tried to play a loose puck, but his pass deflected off a crowd of players to Ryan. He had a BU defender on him and his shot sailed wide of an open Terrier net. NU head coach Bruce Crowder pulled Gibson with a minute on the clock and the Huskies had a great chance to tie the score when Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) got the puck in front with Fields down on the ice. Judy's shot missed the open cage high and Mike Ryan was whistled for cross-checking seconds later to put the teams back at even strength. "We had some great chances to make a difference with the score tied 3-3," NU head coach Bruce Crowder said. "But, it didn't happen. Then at the end when the score was 4-3 we had a great opportunity, but again it didn't happen. I'm extremely proud of my team. I thought we came back, down 2-0, and battled. We made it through that first period and I thought we had things going pretty good." Crowder gave credit to Gibson, who kept the Huskies in the game in the first period. "Well, that's what you need out of your goaltender. The shots were 14-7 and he was equal to the task. We could have been down two, three, four, but we were just down one. I think he had a tremendous tournament for us." Fahey was pleased with the Husky effort. "I thought our guys played a great game," Fahey said. "A bounce here, a bounce there...unfortunately there has to be a winner and a loser. But, top to bottom, I'm proud of the way the guys played. For whatever reason it just wasn't meant to be tonight." It was the Terriers' 24th Beanpot title. The Huskies were going for their first championship since 1988. Attendance:17565 Start time:8:05 pm End time:10:55 pm Total time:2:50
