| 2001-02 Schedule/Results New Hampshire 6, Northeastern 2
DURHAM, NH - New Hampshire scored five unanswered goals over the final two periods to defeat Northeastern on Saturday night 6-2 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. Junior Colin Hemingway (Surrey, BC) scored his first career hat trick, including the game-winner for the top-ranked Wildcats who improve to 21-6-3, 13-4-3 in Hockey East. NU, ranked 13th, drops to 17-12-3, 10-8-2 in Hockey East. The Huskies had a pair of great chances to take the early 1-0 lead. Skating four players aside nine minutes into the game, Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) had a shot hit the left post. Ryan got the rebound and fed Trevor Reschny (Macklin, SASK) in front, but Reschny's shot hit the right post. A few minutes later, UNH took the 1-0 advantage while on the power-play. Garrett Stafford (Los Angeles, CA) controlled the puck at the point and passed to Hemingway in the left slot. Hemingway took a few strides closer to the net and scored off a wrist shot, his 23rd of the season. Northeastern tied the game at 14:54. Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) fired a slap shot on net from along the left boards. UNH goalie Matt Carney (Bridgewater, MA) made the glove save initially, but the puck popped loose. Sophomore Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) was in position to poke the puck past the goal line for his third of the year. Northeastern took a 2-1 lead just 1:58 into the second period. Freshman Donny Grover (Rockland, MA) put a shot on net that deflected off a UNH defender and into the goal for his third of the year. But UNH quickly struck back with a pair of scores only 1:07 apart. UNH broke in on a three-on-one. Preston Callander (Regina, SASK) passed to his left to Nathan Martz (Chilliwack, BC) whose shot from the left slot beat NU goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) at 3:17. Then at 4:24, Hemingway added his second of the game when he knocked in the rebound of his own shot to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish. The Wildcats added some insurance in the third period. At 5:43, freshman Sean Collins blasted a slap shot top shelf past Gibson for his 17th of the season and a 4-2 UNH lead. Callander then made it a 5-2 game at 11:45 when he swung in front of Gibson and scored on his own second chance. Hemingway completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal at 16:31. Gibson made a career-high 42 saves for the Huskies while Carney had 27 stops for the Wildcats. Northeastern defeated UNH on Friday night at Matthews Arena 5-4 in overtime. Fahey tied the game at 19:59 of the third and Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) scored the game-winner at 2:01 of OT. The teams split the season series, 1-1-1. On Oct. 26 at the Whittemore Center, NU and UNH skated to a 2-2 tie. NU is now 0-5-2 in its last seven at the Whittemore Center and 1-10-2 all-time. Northeastern returns to action on Friday Feb. 22 at home against Boston College.
