| 2001-02 Schedule/Results UMass-Lowell 4, Northeastern 1
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team lost to UMass-Lowell 4-1 on senior night at Matthews Arena. With the win, Lowell (19-11-3, 11-9-3 Hockey East) clinched fourth place and home ice in the Hockey East quarterfinals. Northeastern (17-15-3, 10-11-2) is now on a season-long four-game losing streak. Lowell senior goalie Jimi St. John (Windsor, ONT) stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn his seventh win of the season. NU freshman goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) was also strong in net, making 35 saves. Junior forward Mark Concannon (Hull, MA) scored two goals in the third period for the River Hawks to seal the victory. Following a scoreless first period when Gibson made 15 saves and St. John 10, the River Hawks scored a pair of power-play goals in the second for a 2-0 lead. UML was 2-2 on the power-play. The first goal came at 2:24. Darryl Green (Chatham, ONT) put a shot on net from the right point. Steve Slonina (Abington, MA) was camped in front and redirected it past Gibson. NU has now allowed its opponent to score the game’s first goal in the last six games. UML added to its lead at 16:58 with its second power-play goal. Ed McGrane (Hamilton, ONT) put a shot on net that was saved by Gibson. The rebound came to Laurent Meunier (Echirolles, FRA) right in front of the net and he got the puck to Peter Hay (Abbotsford, BC), who was at the left post. Hay stuffed the puck in the net for his eighth of the year. NU cut the deficit in half just 37 seconds later. Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) won a faceoff to the right of St. John. Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) took the puck behind the net and found Trevor Reschny (Macklin, SASK) open in front. Reschny beat St. John stick side up top at 17:35 for his fifth goal of the year. Concannon gave the River Hawks some breathing room at 5:58 of the third. He forced an NU turnover and broke in alone in Gibson. His shot was initially stopped by Gibson between his pads, but the puck trickled through and past the goal line for Concannon’s fourth of the year. NU had a chance to cut the lead to 3-2 while on a power-play midway through the period. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) got the puck open in front but his shot banged off the post. Concannon sealed the win for the River Hawks with his second of the night at 18:17. Lowell had been on a five-game winless streak but has won its last two to take the fourth spot from Northeastern. After posting a 12-2-2 record at home, the Huskies have now lost two straight at Matthews Arena. Currently, NU sits in fifth place in Hockey East, one point ahead of Boston College. NU closes out the season at Merrimack on Friday night while BC plays a home-and-home series with New Hampshire. If NU finishes in fifth, the Huskies will travel to Lowell for the Hockey East quarterfinals. NU won the season series from UMass-Lowell, 2-1. The Huskies swept a weekend series from the River Hawks back in January. It is the second straight season Lowell has defeated NU on senior night at Matthews Arena.
