| 2001-02 Schedule/Results UMass-Lowell 5, Northeastern 2
LOWELL, MA - The Northeastern men's hockey team lost to UMass-Lowell 5-2 Thursday night in the first game of a best-of-three series in the Hockey East quarterfinals at Tsongas Arena. With the score tied 2-2 in the third period, the River Hawks scored twice in the span of 34 seconds to break open the game. UML added an empty-net goal for the final margin. It was Northeastern's sixth straight Hockey East playoff defeat. NU's last win in the playoffs came March 13, 1998, 3-2, over UMass-Lowell in the quarterfinals. The River Hawks opened the scoring at 17:44 of the first period. Mark Concannon (Hull, MA) fed Anders Strome (Winnipeg, MAN) at the left point and Strome's wrist shot beat NU goalie Keni Gibson (Stittsville, ONT) stick side for a 1-0 advantage. The Huskies tied the game at 12:15 of the second period just five seconds after a power-play chance had ended. Freshman defenseman Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) put a shot on goal from the right point that beat a screened UML goalie Jimi St. John (Windsor, ONT) to tie the game. Senior Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) assisted on the play, becoming the 41st player in NU history to reach the 100-point mark. Lowell, however, reclaimed the lead before the end of the period. At 18:18, Laurent Meunier (Echirolles, France) skated into the NU zone and dropped the puck to his teammate and countryman Yorick Treille (Grenobles, France). Treille's blast from 50 feet beat Gibson five-hole for the 2-1 advantage at the end of two. The Huskies had some great chances to tie the game early in third as Lowell was whistled for three penalties in the first 5:15 of the final period. NU had a five-on-three advantage beginning at 5:15 for a stretch of 1:02. NU's best opportunity on the two-man advantage came on a blast from Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) but St. John made an impressive glove save to rob NU of the tying goal. The Huskies failed to score on the five-on-three, but managed to tie the game before the five-on-four advantage ran out. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) fed Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) in the high slot and Ryan's one-timer beat St. John for his team-leading 23rd goal of the season at 7:10 of the third. After NU tied the game, Lowell nearly took the lead right back as after the faceoff, Concannon broke in front on Gibson, but his shot clanged off the right post. However, UML eventually did score the go-ahead goal. At 10:54, Strome fought off an NU defender as he cut across the ice toward the NU goal. With one hand on the stick, Strome was able to beat Gibson far side for what proved to be the game-winning goal. UML added some insurance just 26 seconds later as Darryl Green (Chatham, ONT) added a fourth goal for the River Hawks. With Gibson pulled, Ed McGrane (Hamilton, ONT) sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:45 for the River Hawks. Gibson finished the game with 18 saves while St. John made 22 for the River Hawks. Game two of the best-of-three series will be Friday night in Lowell. The winner of the series advances to the Hockey East semifinals Friday March 15 at the FleetCenter.
