| 2001-02 Schedule/Results UMass-Lowell 3, Northeastern 1
BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern men’s hockey team lost in the deciding game-three of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Saturday night 3-1 against UMass-Lowell at the Tsongas Arena. The Huskies finish the season with a 19-17-3 record. Lowell (22-12-3) will advance to the semifinals next Friday night at the FleetCenter. With the game knotted at one in the third period, UML’s Baptiste Amar (Gap, France) broke the deadlock at 5:55. Ed McGrane (Hamilton, ONT) won a faceoff to the right of NU goalie Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) back to Amar at the point. The freshman defenseman put a wrist shot on net that deflected off a player in front and into the goal for what proved to be the game-winner. It was just Amar’s third goal of the season. Lowell junior Steve Slonina (Abington, MA), robbed several times by Braun, added an empty net goal at 19:48 of the third period to seal the win. Junior Mark Concannon (Hull, MA) deflected a Northeastern pass out of the UML zone and raced up the ice with a Husky defenseman in tow to grab the loose puck when Slonina interceded and tapped it in from the right side of the goal to secure the win and the series for the River Hawks. Braun made 32 saves in defeat. The senior, who did not start game-one of the series, but backstopped NU to a 4-2 win in game-two, stopped 63 of 67 shots he faced over the two games. UML’s Cam McCormick (Kamloops, BC), who like Braun did not start game-one but came on in relief in game-two, made22 stops for the victory. The Huskies got on the board first at 8:07 of the opening period. Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) passed the puck out of the NU zone along the boards to Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY). The freshman broke in on a 2x1 with Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA). Guerriero drew the lone defender to him and slid the puck to Levesque, who moved in alone on McCormick and stuffed in the game’s first goal. NU led 1-0 after the first period, but the River Hawks tied the game only 19 seconds into the second. Yorick Treille (Grenobles, France) flicked a shot from deep into the right corner of the ice towards the NU goal. His shot deflected in off Braun. Laurent Meunier (Echirolles, France) and Peter Hay (Abbotsford, BC) each added assists. Lowell won game-one of the series 5-2 on Thursday night. The River Hawks broke open a 2-2 game in the third with a pair of goals 34 seconds apart and then added an empty-net score. The Huskies evened the series on Friday night with a 4-2 victory behind 31 saves by Braun and a goal and an assist from both Ryan and Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA). The 19 wins in the season are the most for the Huskies since the 1997-98 team finished the year with 21. The game is also the final in the Northeastern careers for eight seniors: captain Jim Fahey (Milton, MA), assistant captains Levesque and Lynch, Braun, Matt Coates (Dedham, MA), Arik Engbrecht (Winnipeg, MAN), Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) and Joe Mancuso (Westwood, MA).
