BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern University men’s hockey team defeated Boston College 4-3 on Saturday at Matthews Arena. With the victory, the Huskies improve to 2-2-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in Hockey East. The Eagles drop to 1-3-1 and 0-2-0 in Hockey East. It was NU’s first victory over BC since a 6-5 win Nov. 12, 1999. NU had been 0-7-1 in its last eight versus the Eagles. Junior Mike Ryan (Milton, MA), playing in his first game of the season, scored NU’s third and fourth goals of the game, with the latter proving to be the game-winner. Senior Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) had a goal and two assists for his third multi-point game of the season. For the Eagles, Ryan Shannon (Darien, CT) had a pair of goals for the Eagles. Mike Gilhooly (Calgary, ALB) made his second start of the season for the Huskies and finished with 35 saves. Freshman Matti Katliainen (Espoo, Finland), making his second collegiate start, had 14 stops. The Eagles got on the board early when BC took advantage of an awkward bounce off the board and Gilhooly being out of net. Dave Spina (Mesa, AZ) got the puck to Shannon at the left post who scored the goal just 30 seconds into the game. Spina would receive a five-minute major at 2:20 of the first period, and Northeastern used the man-advantage to tie the game. Fahey scored his third power-play goal of the season off assists from freshmen Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) and Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) at 2:57. NU took the lead for good at 14:48 of the first period. With the Huskies shorthanded, NU sophomore Brian Tudrick (Stow, MA) stole the puck and got it to Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) along the left boards. Hayward broke in on the BC net and scored the shorthanded goal. It was the first shorthanded goal by the Huskies since Chris Lynch scored one versus UMass-Lowell Oct. 27 of last season. In the second period, Ryan scored his first goal of the season at 10:11. Fahey got the puck to Ryan crossing center ice, and the junior forward moved around the BC defender and skated in alone on Kaltiainen to give the Huskies a 3-1 advantage. But the Eagles struck back before the end of the second period. Ales Dolinar (East Northport, NY) scored the first goal of his senior season at 17:59 off an assist from Tony Voce (Philadelphia, PA). Ryan added his second goal of the night at 3:21 of the third. He moved in on the BC net from the left side and fired the puck into the far side of the net for what proved to be the game-winning score. The Eagles, playing with six skaters and an empty-net, came within a goal on Shannon’s second goal of the game with just 41 seconds remaining. But BC failed to score the equalizer. In the first games of each of Ryan’s three seasons at Northeastern combined, he now has scored seven goals and added an assist in three Husky victories. After winning its opening game versus Vermont, Boston College has now not won in its last four, with three losses and a tie. Next up for the Eagles is a home game on Oct. 26 versus Notre Dame, while the Huskies will play that night as well, at New Hampshire
