| 2001-02 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, New Hampshire 2 (OT)
DURHAM, NH - The Northeastern University men's hockey team tied New Hampshire 2-2 on Friday night in Durham, N.H. NU is now 2-2-1, 1-0-1 in Hockey East, while UNH is 2-1-1- and 1-0-1 in Hockey East. Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) scored a pair of goals for NU. Senior goalie Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) made 35 saves for the Huskies. Matt Carney (Bridgewater, MA) had 26 saves for the Wildcats. Freshman forward Sean Collins (Reading, MA) scored the game-tying goal with just 2:13 remaining in the third period. Collins chased down a loose puck to the right of Braun, who came out of the net. Braun's attempted poke check failed, leaving the net open for Collins to tie the game with the fourth goal of his freshman season. Braun made several highlight-film saves throughout the contest, stopping numerous breakaways. In the first period with 1:26 remaining, Darren Haydar (Milton, ONT) skated in alone on Braun and tried to go top shelf, but Braun made the glove save. In the third period, Patrick Foley (Milton, MA) had two open shots on Braun. But the senior came up with the first stop, and then stoned Foley on his attempt off the rebound. At 5:59 of the third, Collins broke free. He attempted to put the puck in the right corner of the net, but Braun sprawled out and got his skate on the puck, deflecting it to safety. In the early going, it was all New Hampshire, as UNH was outshooting NU 5-0 over the first three minutes. But Braun made all five saves, and NU made its first shot count. Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) put a shot on goal from the left wing. The puck trickled through Carney's pads but stopped before crossing the goal line. However, an alert Fahey skated in to tip the puck into the goal. After a long debate by the officials, they ruled no NU player was in the crease and that the puck crossed the line prior to the net being dislodged. It was the first time this season that NU scored the game's first goal. Fahey gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead at 17:45 of the first. On the power-play, Fahey took a crossing-pass from freshman Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) and with Scott Selig (Duxbury, MA) screening in front, fired a slap shot past Carney for his second goal of the game. For Fahey, playing in his 109th career game, it was his second career two-goal game. The first came in his fifth career game versus Notre Dame Nov. 7, 1998. The goal was Fahey's fifth of the season, tying his career-high set as a freshman. In the second period, Husky freshman Jared Mudryk (Leduc, ALB) had a breakaway of his own. He tried to go to the backhand to beat Carney but did not get a clean shot off. In the scramble to get after the loose puck following Mudryk's shot, Trevor Reschny (Macklin, SASK) was whistled for holding at 8:59. Then 24 seconds into the power-play, Colin Hemingway (Surrey, BC) tipped in a Tyson Teplitsky (Saskatoon, SASK) shot to put UNH on the board. New Hampshire entered the game allowing only 14 shots a game. The Huskies managed 28 shots, 26 in regulation. NU also held UNH to five-shots below its average of 42, with 37. Northeastern returns to action on Saturday as the Huskies host Notre Dame at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
