PROVIDENCE, RI – The Northeastern men’s hockey team ended a six-game losing streak against Providence with a 3-1 victory over the Friars on Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence. The win also snapped NU’s four-game winless streak, as the Huskies had been 0-2-2 in their last four. Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) and Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) each scored second period goals and senior Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 13 seconds to play in the third period. Senior Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) continued his strong play, allowing just one goal and making 33 stops. For the Friars, Nolan Schaefer stopped 44 NU shots, including 33 over the final two periods. The last time the Huskies defeated the Friars came in the final game of the 1999 season when Lynch scored an overtime goal to give NU a 6-5 victory. In the six losses, the Huskies scored just nine goals despite averaging 37 shots per game. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies finally cracked the scoreboard at 3:35 of the second on the power-play. Ryan Dudgeon (Port Elgin, ONT) controlled the puck at the right point and passed off to Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY) at the circle. Mastronardi spotted an open Ortlip to the right of the PC net, and Ortlip deflected the Mastronardi pass past Schaefer for his second goal of the season. It was NU’s first lead over the Friars since a Matt Keating goal at 2:48 of the first period in a game played Nov. 19, 1999, seven meetings ago. PC eventually tied that game in the second period and went on to the 3-1 win. The Huskies added to their lead later in the second period. Ryan took a pass from Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) at the left post and scored his sixth goal of the season. Ryan now has a point in every game he has played this season, six straight. Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) also assisted on the play. The Friars trimmed their deficit to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 13:01. Doug Wright’s (Kamsack, SASK) first attempt was stopped by Braun but he stuffed home his own rebound. Stephen Wood (Sudbury, MA) and Jeff Mason (Easthampton, MA) both assisted on the play. NU had a great chance to increase its lead when Jonathan Goodwin was whistled for hitting from behind at 14:50 of the second, resulting in a five-minute major. During the major, NU put five shots on net but were unable to score. Three-minutes and 31 seconds into the major, Ryan was called for hooking creating a 4x4 situation over the final 1:29 of the five-minute major. Braun was strong in net in the third period, with a number of key stops. Just three minutes into the period, Drew Omicioli (Warwick, RI) snuck in alone and tried to put a fake on Braun. However, the NU netminder didn’t bite and stopped Omicioli’s wrist shot. One of Providence’s best chances came with a little under six minutes to play. Peter Fregoe (Massena, NY) had a shot from in front that Braun deflected to his left. The puck bounced right to Devin Rask (Parkside, SASK) who quickly returned fire on the Husky goal. Braun was up to the challenge, lunging to his left and making the glove stop to preserve the 2-1 lead. With under a minute to play, PC pulled Schaefer. The move didn’t work as Fahey got to a puck in the neutral zone and his clearing pass into the PC end wound up on Lynch’s stick, who outraced a Friar player to the puck, and the senior easily tapped home the empty-net goal. It was the first third-period goal for the Huskies since Ryan scored in the third versus Boston College Oct. 20, five games ago. It was the first victory of the season for Braun, who has a 1-2-2 record in net. In six games in goal this season, Braun has an impressive 2.39 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. For the game, Northeastern outshot Providence 47-34. The same two teams will play each other again on Saturday night, this time in Boston at Matthews Arena.
