| Northeastern freshman Yale Lewis scored in his collegiate debut, as the Huskies skated to a 3-3 tie with Colgate in both teams' season opener Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
NU (0-0-1) started the season with a tie for the second consecutive year, knotting Vermont in Burlington on Oct. 5, 2002.
With 6:11 left in the first period, junior defenseman Tim Judy ripped a slapshot from the top left circle into the upper corner of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The power-play goal was assisted by freshman Bryan Cirullo and sophomore Mike Morris.
Colgate answered five minutes later when junior Darryl McKinnon scored on a two-on-one breakaway with 1:14 left in the first to tie the game at 1. He was assisted by sophomore Jon Smyth.
Northeastern came out strong in the second period, with junior Jared Mudryk banging one home a goal from the low post on a power play to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. Senior Eric Ortlip and junior Donny Grover assisted on the play.
Colgate evened the score again when Kyle Wilson sent a pass from behind the net to Adam Mitchell, who beat Keni Gibson (17 saves) top shelf.
Northeastern’s third goal of the night came with 10:41 left in the second period. Freshman Yale Lewis stole the puck at the Colgate blue line, circled in front of the net and beat Colgate netminder David Cann (26 saves) to his glove side to score his first-career Husky goal.
Colgate scored its first power-play goal with 14:51 left in the third period when sophomore Kyle Wilson scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at 3. He was assisted by sophomore Ryan Smith and senior Kyle Doyle.
Morris almost won the game for NU with four minutes left in regulation, but his wrister from 15 feet out clanged off two posts and out from the goal.
The Huskies converted two of their power-play opportunities, while Colgate went 1-for-5 on the man-advantage.
Northeastern outshot the Raiders 29-20.
