| 2003-04 Schedule/Results No. 4 New Hampshire 5, Northeastern 2
The Huskies surrendered four second-period goals and couldn't make up the difference, falling 5-2 to fourth-ranked New Hampshire for the second straight night in Hockey East action Saturday in Durham. Northeastern outshot its opponent for the seventh time in 10 outings, but still failed to get in the win column, dropping to 0-8-2 on the season and 0-6-1 in Hockey East action. UNH improved to 8-2-1 and 5-1-1. One of the highlights of the evening for the Huskies was sophomore Jonathan Koop nettting his first career goal. The walk-on from Dallas, Texas, ripped a slapper from the blue line past UNH goalie Jeff Petrasiak (30 saves) with 5:12 remaining in the contest to bring NU within 5-2. The most impressive statistic from the home-and-home series was improvement of the Husky penalty-killing unit. The Wildcats entered the series leading the nation in power-play conversion percentage (31 percent). NU limited UNH to 2-of-13 (.154) scores. "We played well, but let down at some times and a good team like UNH takes advantage of those opportunities," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "Their goaltender (Petrasiak) played extremely well." Sean Collins gave UNH a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 1:58 of the second period. Justin Aikins and Brian Yandle assisted on the play. Only 79 seconds later, Brett Hemingway slipped a goal past Gibson from the bottoom left circle for a 2-0 lead. After UNH went up two goals, the Huskies controlled the action and kept the play in the Wildcats' end. However, NU couldn't capitalize on any of its scoring chances. Instead of coming up with a strike to halve the deficit, UNH's Dan Travis was left wide open at the left post with an empty net and he knocked in a rebound to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead at the 12:58 mark. The Huskies answered with a Jason Guerriero power-play goal with 2:42 left in the second period to get within 3-1. Eric Ortlip picked up a loose puck off the boards and sent it to Guerriero at the right post. Guerriero slid the puck between the pipe and Petrasiak's leg pad for his third power-play goal of the season. The Wildcats responded immediately with a goal from Winnik 28 seconds later to halt the Huskies' momentum from gaining any more steam. Travis found Winnik at the far post for an open-net goal. NU entered the second intermission trailing, 4-1, despite outshooting UNH, 13-10, in the second period and 19-17 through the first 40 minutes. Callander and Aikins used some nifty stickwork, including a between the legs drop pass, for the Wildcats's final tally of the evening. Aikins, slid the puck back to a trailing Callander, who fired a blast from close range past NU goalie Keni Gibson (23 saves). Nearing the end of the contest, UNH was awarded a penalty shot. Steve Saviano skated in on Gibson, who stood his ground and stonewalled Saviano. In the first period, Gibson robbed Aikins of a goal on a partial breakaway just one minute into action with a lightning-quick glove save. The Huskies successfully killed off the Wildcats' first power-play opportunity and even had the best scoring chance when Bryan Esner skated past two UNH defenders for a shorthanded scoring opportunity. NU was also denied on a man-advantage opportunity and the teams only managed five shots through the first 10 minutes of play. The play was even at the end of the first 20 minutes as evidence of the scoreless tie and the slight shot advantage UNH held over NU, 7-6.
