Junior Keni Gibson turned away all 25 shots he faced for his second career shutout, as Northeastern downed Vermont, 1-0, for its first win of the year in non-conference action at Matthews Arena Saturday night. "It was a longtime coming," said head coach Bruce Crowder. "Something had to give and I'm glad it went our way. Both goalies played well and Keni was great. He's been playing very well lately." Gibson's last shutout was a 3-0 win at Boston University January 6, 2002. The Huskies improved to 1-9-2 overall, while Vermont dropped to 0-11-2. "It was bound to happen sooner or later, and we wanted it sooner than later," said Gibson. "Our guys blocked shots, cleared rebounds and kept the pressure off me." The Huskies were awarded the first power play of the game, but it was nulled after a minute when Mike Morris was whistled for interference. Just 51 seconds later Yale Lewis was called for roughing, but Northeastern successfully fended off the 5-on-3 and the remainder of the other UVM man-advantage. Northeastern killed all three Vermont power plays and has now killed nine straight and 23 of the last 26. After 13 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Ray Ortiz tallied his first career goal to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead at 13:46 of the first period. Brian Deeth send a shot wide of the net. Lewis picked up the loose puck and circled toward the boards before bulling his way past a Vermont defender and finding Ortiz in the slot for a one-timer. Deeth's assist was the first of his career. The Huskies almost struck again with two minutes left in the first period. Jason Guerriero won a face-off at the right circle in the Catamounts zone and send the puck back to Morris. Morris blasted a shot off that rang off the far post. The teams went scoreless in the second frame. Northeastern threatened during a late-period power play but didn't add to their lead and took a 1-0 advantage into the final set. Vermont took a power-play advantage with 13:43 left in the third period, but the Huskies neutralized the Catamount attack. NU made several good scoring attempts later in the period but came up empty-handed, despite outshooting UVM, 10-5. Vermont pulled its goalie in the final minute of the game, but the Huskies staved off the threat for the victory. Vermont (0-11-2) vs. Northeastern (1-9-2)
