Jason Guerriero had seven points in two games to earn tourney MVP honors.
Junior Jason Guerriero recorded his third career four-point game, scoring twice and assisting on two others, to lead the Huskies to thrilling, 7-5, victory over Mercyhurst in the 53rd Annual Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament championship at Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y., Monday night.

The RPI tourney title was the second for Northeastern, with the first coming during the 1974-75 campaign. Guerriero registered seven points (three goals, four assists) over the two-game tournament to earn MVP honors. Forwards Steve Sanders and Mike Morris and goalie Keni Gibson also made the all-tournament team.

The Huskies extended their win streak to four games, their longest since Nov. 23-30, 2001 when the squad downed Clarkson, St. Lawrence, Princeton and Holy Cross. NU improves to 4-9-2, while Mercyhurst is 7-7-1.

NU battled back from a 3-2 second period deficit to take a 6-3 lead, before the Lakers scored twice within a 16-second span with six minutes remaining in the game. Mercyhurst's furious comeback came to a crashing end when Guerriero scooped up a loose puck along the boards in the NU end and backhanded a shot the length of the ice for an empty-net goal.

NU freshman Bryan Esner started the scoring, steeling the puck in the Mercyhurst zone and finding Guerriero in front of the net. Guerriero beat Mercyhurst netminder Jordan Wakefield (32 saves) at 5:41 of the first. Guerriero extended his point streak to three games and has nine points over that stretch.

The Lakers knotted the game at 1 after Keni Gibson (28 saves) lost control of the puck in the crease and MC's Kyle Gourgon crashed the net to capitalize on the scoring opportunity at 13:42 of the first.

NU answered 50 seconds later when Guerriero raced into the Mercyhurst zone then slid a pass across the crease to Donny Grover, who was trailing in the right slot and one-timed his first goal of the season at 14:52.

Northeastern entered the first break with a 2-1 lead and a 15-9 shot advantage. The Huskies went 0-for-3 with a man-advantage in the first 20 minutes of play and killed off two Mercyhurst power plays.

The Lakers top-ranked, power-play unit evened the game at 2 with 16:43 remaining in the second. Scott Champagne banged home a rebound off a shot by David Wrigley.

Mercyhurst then took the lead for the first time in the game with a breakaway goal by Mike Carter at 5:17 of the second. Erik Johnson poked a loose puck up to Carter in the Husky zone and he skated in on Gibson uncontested, beating him stick side.

Midway through the second period, Morris hit Guerriero on the tape at the Mercyhurst blue line for a breakaway, but Wakefield turned him away. Just 30 seconds later a sprawling Wakefield knocked a Grover shot out of the air that seemed headed for an open net.

The Huskies continued to pressure in the Mercyhurst zone. Trevor Reschny created a 2-on-0 play with 5:25 left in the second. Brian Tudrick skated in with Bryan Esner all alone on Wakefield, but held on to the puck and sent a backhander into the side of the net.

It was Gibson's turn to come up with some heroics two minutes later when he stoned Peter Rynshoven on a breakaway with 3:23 left.

The Huskies' relentless attack finally paid off with 3:08 left in the second. Guerriero won a face-off in the Mercyhurst end and passed back to Morris who rifled a shot off Wakefield and Steve Sanders was there to knock in the rebound. The goal was Sanders third in as many games since scoring his career first Dec. 13 against Princeton.

With 14 seconds left in the second, Gibson stopped another breakaway, this time thwarting Champagne.

In the waning moments of the second period, freshman defenseman Bryan Cirullo picked up a loose puck at center ice and skated in uncontested. Cirullo waited for Wakefield to back up then sniped a perfect shot that clanged under the top pipe and into the net to give NU a 4-3 lead heading into the third. Cirullo was the sixth Husky to score his first career goal in each of the last six games.

The Huskies led after two for the fourth straight contest. NU outshot Mercyhurst, 29-21, through the first 40 minutes.

Northeastern added to its lead at 5:41 of the third period. Esner passed the puck to Reschny in the Lakers' end. Reschny took his time and skated around from circle-to-circle and baited Wakefield into a mistake then snapped a wrister past the freshman keeper for a 5-3 Husky advantage. Cirullo also assisted on the play.

Three minutes later, with NU continuing to press the action in the Mercyhust end, sophomore Brian Swiniarski was the benefector of a Laker turnover, sending a backhander over Wakefield's shoulder.

The Lakers mounted a comeback in the latter half of the third period, mustering two scrum goals with a lot of traffic in front of the NU net. David Wrigley scored the first at 13:56, then Denis Kirstein closed the gap within one less than a minute later, stuffing in a loose puck at 14:12.
