Junior goalie Keni Gibson made 34 saves and classmate Jason Guerriero registered three points, as Northeastern shut out second-ranked Boston College, 3-0, in Hockey East action before 3,326 fans at Matthews Arena Saturday night. "It's a tremendous win for the kids, but again it's just one win in January and we have to get back out there," said Crowder, whose team is 5-0-1 when leading after two periods and 5-3-2 when scoring first. The Huskies snapped BC's 12-game unbeaten streak, the longest in the nation, and extended their own win streak to five straight games, the longest NU win streak since the 1988-89 campaign. NU is now 5-9-2 and 1-7-1 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles fall to 13-3-3 and 6-1-2. "[Gibson] made some huge saves for us. [Steve] Birnstill made a huge block, this team is coming around in all areas," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. With the victory, Gibson tied both the Northeastern single-season shutout record with his third on the year and the NU career mark with his fourth career blanking. Marc Robitaille (1996-98) recorded four shutouts for the Huskies in two season, including three in 1996-97, while Gary Thornton (1964-67) also has four career shutouts. "It feels pretty good. It's really a team record," said Gibson. "Our guys were all over blocking shots, clearing rebounds and letting me see the puck well." However, Gibson wasn't the only player to come up with some heroics. Guerriero's game-winning goal and two assists gives him 12 points in the last four games, including a four-game, two assist streak. Sophomore Mike Morris had a goal and an assist and junior defenseman Jon Awe also had two points with two helpers. Birnstill, a freshman defenseman, cleared a puck off the goal line in the second period to preserve NU's 1-0 lead. The shutout was Northeastern's third ever over BC. The most recent was a 0-0 tie on December 6, 2000. NU's first shutout over the Eagles was in the first round of the 1988 Beanpot tournament and the Huskies went on to win the title with a 6-3 victory over BU the following week. After a scoreless first period in which the Huskies were outshot, 12-4, Guerriero scored scored the only goal the Huskies would need with 5:04 remaining in the second period. He was assisted by fellow first-liners Morris and Steve Sanders. Morris received a pass around center ice and skated deep into the Eagles' zone before sliding a perfect cross-ice pass to Guerriero for the finish. "This team is getting better every time out," said Crowder. "We were getting stuff thrown at us a couple weeks ago and now we're turning it around." NU senior Eric Ortlip banged home the puck as it was trickling over the goal line to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead 2:23 into the third. Awe had blasted a shot from the left point that BC goalie Matti Kaltiainen (15 saves) couldn't handle and Ortlip buried it at the far post for a power-play goal. The score came against BC's top-ranked, power-play unit that came into the game with a .911 success rate. NU went 1-for-4 with a man-advantage. Late in the third, Morris added an insurance goal, scoring on a perfect pass from Guerriero with 3:28 remaining in the third period. Awe was also credited with an assist. The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 34-18, for the game, including 11-4 in the final stanza, but they couldn't find a crack in Gibson's armor. "We had some conversations after the first and I thought we just didn't come to play," said Crowder. "The kids just responded. We've got ourselves in a deep hole but we were able to take another step tonight." Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
