| 2003-04 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Holy Cross 2
Sophomore Steve Sanders scored the game-winning goal for Northeastern, which topped visiting Holy Cross, 5-2, in non-conference action Saturday night at Matthews Arena. In the process, Husky coach Bruce Crowder recorded his 100th career win at Northeastern. The win was NU's sixth in its last seven games and it was also junior goalie Keni Gibson's sixth win in his last seven starts. The Huskies, who were coming off a gutwrenching, 4-3, overtime loss to Boston University Friday, improved to 6-10-2 overall. The Crusaders dropped to 13-5-2 on the season. "I don't know if we played a team this year that was tougher defensively than Holy Cross," said Crowder, whose record at NU is 100-145-26 and career record is 199-220-45. "It was a hard fought victory. There's no easy games in college hockey anymore and you have to get mentally prepared every night whether it's Boston College, Boston University or Holy Cross." Sanders scored the game-winner at 7:28 in the third period to put the Huskies up 3-2. Junior Jason Guerriero sent a beautiful, cross-ice pass through traffic from the right boards to the left post for a Sanders' one-timer as he was crashing the net. Mike Morris also assisted on the goal. The points for Morris and Guerriero extended their point-scoring streaks to six games each. Guerriero is tied for the team lead in goals (8) and assists (13) and leads the team with 19 points. He's recorded two assists in five of the last six games. Husky Ray Ortiz added insurance when he deposited the rebound off a Yale Lewis shot into the net at 15:01 of the third period to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead. NU's Brian Swiniarski added an empty-netter with 21 seconds remaining in the game to seal the game. After a high-scoring first period, which ended in a 2-2 tie, both Holy Cross and Northeastern went scoreless in the second. The Huskies had four shots on goal, while Holy Cross had three. The game started off with the Crusaders' Blair Bartlett scoring with an assist from Andrew McKay to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead 6:21 into the game. McKay fired in his own rebound past his former Ottawa Jr. Senators teammate Gibson (20 saves) to his glove side. Northeastern answered with a goal from Yale Lewis two minutes later. Junior Jon Awe passed the puck to classmate Aaron Moore, who sent the puck up the wing to Lewis. Lewis skated over the blueline and ripped a wrist shot from the top of the circle past Holy Cross goalie Tony Quesada (24 saves). Holy Cross struck back at 12:42 in the first when Andrew McKay scored unassisted to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. McKay picked up a loose puck in the Husky end, turned and fired a shot past Gibson to the near post. The Huskies tied the score at 2-2 at 18:27 in the first period when senior Eric Ortlip scored a power-play goal. Junior Tim Judy started the play in the NU zone and sent a crisp pass to junior Jason Guerriero on the left wing. Guerriero sped down the ice over the blue line then waited patiently for the play to develop. A couple of Holy Cross defenders drifted toward Guerriero and he slid a pass into the slot to Ortlip, who wasted no time beating Quesada. Northeastern outshot the Crusaders, 10-7, over the first 20 minutes of play and went 1-for-1 with a man-advantage.
