Northeastern rattled off several shots off in the final minute of overtime, but couldn't find the back of the net, as the Huskies skated to a 1-1 tie with Providence in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Friday night.
NU junior goalie Keni Gibson made 24 saves, while PC's David Cacciola stopped 42 shots. In his 100th-career game, senior Brian Tudrick scored NU's lone goal before the crowd of 1,783.
"It was a pretty good hockey game," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "I have no qualms about the way our kids played. If they play that way every game then we'll be fine."
The Huskies improved to 6-10-3 and 1-8-2 in Hockey East, while the Friars record stands at 8-7-5 and 2-6-4. Northeastern is 6-1-1 in its last eight games.
"It's so hard to get a point in this league," said Crowder. "Sometimes you can be disappointed, but you can't get greedy. We got a point tonight."
Tudrick got the Huskies out to a 1-0 lead with 8:07 remaining in the first period. Tudrick won a face-off in the right circle in the Providence zone. Freshman Bryan Esner knocked the puck back to Brian Cirullo, who blasted a shot off a Providence defender. Tudrick picked up the loose puck and wristed a shot top-shelf to Cacciola's stick side.
Gibson and the Huskies survived a late third-period, power-play to keep the score tied at 1-1.
The Huskies and Friars went scoreless in the second period. NU outshot Providence 13-4 in the set, but the Friars managed to hold off the attack, leaving NU with a 1-0 lead to defend in the final set.
Providence tied the score when Chris Chaput shot the puck high over a sprawling Gibson to even the score at 1-1 just 0:19 into the third period. Cody Loughlean had fired a shot from the point and Gibson made the save. The rebound drifted out in front of the net and while an NU defender had Peter Zingoni tied up, Chaput raced in uncontested for the score.
