Sophomore Mike Morris fired home the game-tying goal with 1:23 left in regulation, as the Huskies overcame a 2-0 deficit for a 3-3 tie with Providence in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena Saturday night.

Northeastern (6-10-4, 1-8-3 HEA) and Providence (8-7-6, 2-6-5) skated to a tie in all three regular-season Hockey East contests, which was the first time that has occured in Husky history since the conference's inception 20 years ago. The schools tied 2-2 on Nov. 7 and 1-1 last night.

"We were down 2-0 and it was a gritty effort," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder. "We found a way to get a point. Last night was a bad tie (NU outshot PC, 43-25, and couldn't hold on to a 1-0 third-period advantage) tonight was a good tie."

The Huskies peppered Providence goalie Bobby Goepfert, who was making his first start since Dec. 28 (a 6-1 loss to St. Cloud St.), with 50 shots. It was the first time NU had 50 shots in a game since Nov. 30, 2001, when the Huskies reeled off 51 in a 7-2 win over Holy Cross at Matthews.

With under two minutes remaining, the Huskies were trailing 3-2 and were on a power play. While scrambling to convert the man-advantage, Jon Awe was whistled for slashing when he tried to stuff in a rebound while PC goalie Bobby Goepfert had the puck covered. Subsequently, Crowder pulled goalie Keni Gibson for an extra skater and the move paid off immediately. Awe was sent off at 18:16 and the Huskies tied the game at 18:37.

On the game-tying goal, Jason Guerriero took the puck down the left wing and pushed it up to Eric Ortlip. Ortlip skated to the bottom of the left circle along the boards and found Morris at the near post. Morris snapped a quick shot to the far post past Goepfert for the game-tying goal with 1:23 left in regulation.

Both teams squandered brilliant scoring opportunities in the extra session, but Goepfert (47 saves) and Gibson (31 saves) were up to the test every time. With 1:30 left, Morris one-timed what seemed like the game-winner into the upper-corner of the net, only to have the puck ricochet of the handle of Goepfert's stick. NU also had a power-play opportunity with 1:12 left in OT, but couldn't take advantage. Gibson made four stops in OT, while Goepfert had two.

The game had end-to-end scoring chances from the opening face-off. In the first period, PC's Chris Chaput cruised down the ice into the Husky zone. An NU defender forced Chaput wide left of the net. He wrapped around the back of the goal and found Colin McDonald open in front for an easy score only 42 seconds into the game.

The Friars struck seven minutes later for a 2-0 lead when Torry Gajda deflected a Cody Loughlean feed from the bottom left circle at the right post at the 7:07 mark of the first.

The Huskies almost got back in the game in the final minute of the first stanza. Guerriero sent a crisp pass to Steve Sanders, who skated in with Morris on a 2-on-1. The pass was a little late and Morris' shot hit the side of the net. On the ensuing action, Sanders was left open in front of the crease and tried to put a move on Goepfert. The netminder stood his ground and when Sanders tried to go top shelf he was there for the stop.

The Friars used the momentum from Goepfert's save to create a scoring opportunity before the first intermission. Gajda tried to fire in a rebound into what seemed to be an open Husky net, but Gibson recovered and made a sliding save to keep NU in the game.

Both teams were awarded one power play in the first period, but neither could convert. Northeastern held an 11-10 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes, despite trailing 2-0 on the scoreboard.

The Huskies halved their deficit six minutes into the second period when Brian Swiniarski banged home a rebound for a power-play goal at the 5:50 mark. However, PC answered three minutes later with another goal from Gajda at 8:29. With Gibson on the ice, Gajda roofed a loose puck just outside the crease.

NU managed to cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final period with a goal from Ray Ortiz with 3:46 left before the second intermission. Yale Lewis cycled the puck to Donny Grover, who rifled the puck toward the net. Ortiz redirected the puck past Goepfert for his fifth goal of the season.

The Huskies outshot the Friars an eye-popping 21-6 in the second period and went 1-for-2 on the power player. NU killed another PC power play during the second period.

Northeastern didn't allow a power-play goal for the fourth straight game, killing the last 13 straight opponent man-advantages.
