| Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals from Jason Guerriero and Jared Mudryk, but second-ranked Boston College scored four unanswered goals to prevail, 4-2, in Hockey East action before 4,120 fans Friday night at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern failed to move up in the Hockey East race, dropping to 6-11-4 overall and 1-9-4 in conference action. Boston College solidified its stance at the top of the standings, improving to 18-3-3 overall and 11-1-2.
Boston College's Chris Collins scored the game-winning goal on a power play at 8:50 in the third period. Tony Voce and Ryan Shannon was credited with assists.
With 61 seconds remaining in the game, BC's Andrew Alberts was whistled for delay of game. With the man-advantage, the NU coach Bruce Crowder also pulled goalie Keni Gibson (24 saves) for a two-man advantage in hopes of tying the game. The Eagles ended NU's chances when Ryan Shannon scored an empty-netter to give BC the 4-2 edge.
NU opened the scoring in the first period when Guerriero took a beautiful cross-ice pass from Mike Morris and put it behind BC goalie Matti Kaltiainen at 10:17 to give the Huskies an early lead.
NU moved the score to 2-0 just two minutes later when Mudryk scored with assists from Eric Ortlip and Tim Judy.
Boston College made it 2-1 before the first period was over on Shannon's first goal of the game at 15:09. The teams went scoreless in the second period, giving NU a 2-1 edge heading into the final set.
BC tied the game when Voce took a pass from Greg Lauze and shot the puck off NU goalie Keni Gibson's skate to make it 2-2 four minutes into the third period.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow night when they travel to Merrimack. The two teams, along with Providence and Boston University, are competing for the sixth-seed in the Hockey East tournament.
