Sophomore Mike Morris scored a third-period, power-play goal with 8:40 remaining to lift Northeastern to a 3-2 victory over Merrimack in Hockey East action at the Volpe Center Saturday night. The win was also Husky head coach Bruce Crowder’s 200th career victory.

The Huskies, who are 7-2-2 in their last 11 games, improved to 7-11-4 overall and 2-9-3 in Hockey East play. The Warriors drop to 8-16-3 and 3-10-3.

“I thought it was a tremendous, hard-fought victory,” said Crowder. “We haven’t been able to win many of these tight, back-and-forth games and we figured out how to gut out a win tonight.”

When questioned about the importance of his 200th career win, Crowder responded, “The meaning of this game in the Hockey East standings is much more significant. When you coach long enough you hope to reach these milestones, and a lot of people probably think I should’ve reached this one a long time ago.”

Morris finished the night with a goal and an assist, as did senior Eric Ortlip. Husky junior defenseman Jon Awe recorded two assists for the third time this season.

The Huskies’ victory was highlighted by two power-play strikes on four opportunities. The Merrimack power-play unit was ranked second in Hockey East, killing off 111-of-125 (.888) opportunities heading into the weekend. NU also managed to apply pressure in the Warriors’ zone throughout the game, holding 40-21 shot advantage.

“We just felt that because their penalty kill pressures you so aggressively that if you move the puck quickly you can attack the net and create some scoring chances,” said Crowder.

The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes. The Huskies outshot the Warriors, 14-7, through the first stanza. NU went 0-for-2 on the power play and killed Merrimack’s only man-advantage situation.

At 8:47 of the first period, Merrimack freshman Jeff Caron was sent off the ice with a five-minute major for hitting from behind and issued a game misconduct after a hit, which left NU junior Jared Mudryk sprawling on the ice. However, the Huskies couldn’t capitalize on the ensuing opportunity, which was shortened by an Ortlip penalty for obstruction interference.

NU’s best scoring opportunity of the first period came with 4:30 remaining. Jason Guerriero hit Morris in stride as he skated up the ice. Morris carried the puck over center ice and into the Warriors’ zone, deked a defender, then quickly snapped a backhander off MC goalie Jim Healey’s chest.

Merrimack almost scored in the first period when Tony Johnson was the benefactor of a turnover the Husky end and fired a shot on Gibson, who came up with a nifty glove save with two minutes left before intermission.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the second period with a power-play goal from Johnson just 53 seconds into play. Merrimack had a failed 3-on-1 attempt, but the Warriors on the play managed to compose themselves in time for a score. Nick Pomponio gathered the puck behind the goal and fed Johnson in the slot for a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies answered with two goals to take a 2-1 advantage into the final period. Mudryk potted his second goal in as many games, while Ortlip netted his seventh power-play goal of the season.

Mudryk’s goal came at 8:19 of the second. Ortlip cycled the puck behind the net. Sophomore defenseman Chuck Tomes then made a great outlet pass to Mudryk who raced down the length of the ice before unleashing a wristshot into the top right corner of the net from the left circle. The assist was Tomes first of the season.

Ortlip’s power-play goal, the 16th of his career, came right in front of the Merrimack goal when he was left uncovered in front of the net to stuff in a rebound. Awe had taken the initial shot from the left circle and Morris fired the rebound off Healey’s pads to Ortlip.

The Warriors responded early in the third period, when Brent Gough scored on a breakaway 3:22 into action to knot the game at 2.
