Northeastern was unable to overcome a 3-0 second period deficit, falling to Massachusetts, 4-1, in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center Thursday night. The Huskies fall to 7-12-4 overall and 2-10-3 in Hockey East play, while the Minutemen improved to 12-7-5 and 8-5-2.

"It was one of our worst performances of the year," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder. "I don't think we were ready to play and it was discouraging. We need to compete, play with intensity and put pressure on people and we didn't do that."

Sophomore Brian Swiniarski scored his team leading 10th goal of the season in defeat and junior defenseman Jon Awe added his second goal of the season and first since Oct. 24 against Merrimack.

Northeastern went 0-for-4 on the power play and allowed UMass a goal on its only man-advantage opportunity. The shots were almost even with the Huskies holding a 21-18 advantage.

UMass broke the scoreless tie at the 6:11 mark of the second period. Greg Mauldin’s shot was stopped by NU netminder Keni Gibson (14 saves), but James Solon buried the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

After an even first period of action which saw seven shots for each team and no penalties, the Minutemen tallied two quick scores in the first five minutes of the second to build a 3-0 lead. Greg Mauldin fired a rising wrist shot from the top of the right circle that went over Gibson’s shoulder at 4:18. Only 32 seconds later, Stephen Werner knocked in his own rebound from close range.

The Huskies answered at 11:28 of the second to cut their deficit to 3-1. Eric Ortlip circled around the back of the UMass net and sent a pass to Swiniarski for a one-timer from the slot that trickled through Gabe Winer’s legs and across the goal line.

UMass stopped any NU momentum from building when Pock converted a UMass 3-on-1 just 31 seconds into the final stanza.

The Huskies had an excellent scoring opportunity with 11:30 left in regulation. Jared Mudryk made a crisp pass to Swiniarski as he crossed the UMass blue line. Winer (19 saves) rushed out to poke check the puck but couldn’t get there in time. Ortlip lifted a wrist shot toward the open net only to have UMass forward Peter Trovato make a glove save, knocking the puck out of mid-air.

However, NU kept the pressure on UMass and their efforts paid off with an Awe goal off a rebound at 11:30. Freshman Aaron Moore and Yale Lewis assisted on the play.

The Huskies had a power-play opportunity in the final five minutes of action and pulled Gibson at the end of the game, but failed to capitalize on either situation.
