| 2003-04 Schedule/Results 52nd Annual Beanpot Semifinal
Boston University received goals from five different players en route to a 5-2 victory over Northeastern in the semifinals of the 52nd Annual Beanpot in front of 15,735 at the FleetCenter Monday. Steve Greeley, Brad Zancanaro, Jekabs Redlihs, Brian McConnell and Ryan Whitney each had a goal for the Terriers (8-10-6). For the Huskies (7-13-4), Eric Ortlip scored his 10th goal of the season, while recording his sixth point in six-career Beanpot games. "I thought Sean Fields (36 saves) had a good game against us, he made some huge saves against some of our better players and it proved to be a big difference in the game," said Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder. "Keni (Gibson) did not have one of his better efforts tonight." BU improved to 74-29 in Beanpot play, while the Huskies drop to 28-75. The Terriers will face Boston College, 4-1 winners over Harvard, in the championship game Mon., Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. Northeastern will play Harvard at 5 p.m. NU jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the game when Ortlip fired a rebound over Field’s right shoulder. Donny Grover ripped a slapper from the point to start the play after collecting a pass from Jared Mudryk. "Any time you score the first goal of the game, it's a good thing, however you have to remember that when you score one minutes into the game there's 59 minutes left in the game," Ortlip said. The Terriers responded with a goal 45 second later to tie and another at 4:54 to take a 2-1 lead. Greeley tied the game with a wrist shot from the left wing circle that beat Gibson (26 saves). BU took the lead when Frantisek Skladany backhanded a shot toward the net and the puck deflected off Zancanaro’s skate past Gibson. With the Terriers holding a one-goal advantage, play went up and down the ice with both teams attacking the net. The momentum swayed in the Huskies direction when BU’s David Klema was whistled for slashing. Although the NU power play couldn’t convert on the opportunity, the Huskies created numerous quality scoring chances. Northeastern continued to pressure in the BU zone and knotted the game at 2 with a goal from freshman Yale Lewis with 2:20 remaining before the break. Lewis took the puck out of the corner and hit Chuck Tomes with a pass at the blue line. Tomes unleashed a blast from the point that Fields stopped, but Lewis crashed the net to stuff in the rebound. After the first period of torrid action, BU held a slim, 11-10, shot advantage. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play. The Terriers regained the lead 57 seconds into the second period when Redlihs shot deflected off an NU defenders’ stick and over Gibson’s leg pads after Zancanaro fed him from behind the net. "I had a slow start to the game, I lost my footing a few times, and there were some lucky bounces for BU," Gibson said. "I gave Brad Zancanaro too much room on his goal. I tried to come back and recover, but then it was too late." Both teams had great scoring chances during an NU power play midway through the second period. Fields stopped consecutive point-blank attempts by Mike Morris. Then, with the NU man-advantage winding down, Fields tried to clear the puck from behind the net. Grover managed to steal the puck and send a pass in front of the open goal, but Brian Swiniarski couldn’t get a stick on it. On the ensuing play, David Van der Gulik had a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, but Gibson stood his ground made the save with 7:45 left in the period. The Terriers extended their lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal from McConnell with 1:34 remaining in the second stanza. Bryan Miller had the puck behind the net then slid a pass to the right post to McConnell, whose shot deflected off an NU defender’s stick over Gibson’s stick. "We blew an assignment on the penalty kill that cost us after it was over," Crowder said. "Any time you give a team a two-goal lead at that tiime in hte game, along with the way Fields was playing, we knew it would be tough to make up." Over the second 20 minutes of play, the Terriers outshot the Huskies, 16-11, and 26-18 through two periods. With Northeastern trailing by two goals heading into the final period, the Huskies turned up the intensity a notch. NU outshot BU, 13-4, over the final 20 minutes of play, but couldn’t slip the puck past Fields. The Huskies also went 0-for-2 with a man-advantage in the third period. BU iced the game with an empty-net goal from Whitney. "We tried as coaches to make the kids worried about the 60 minutes they were going to play and the records of how BU did in the past had no bearing on what will happen," said Crowder, commenting on the history of BU's success. "We didn't have it tonight in a lot of ways. We weren't crisp in our passing. We had some chances on the power play, however we were unable to get the bounces."
