Northeastern outshot UMass Lowell, 47-19, but River Hawk goalie Chris Davidson made an incredible 46 saves, as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Friday night. Sophomore Brian Swiniarski had NU's lone goal in the second period.

"Chris Davidson played a great game and he was the difference out there," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We played well and kept pluggin' away, but sometimes a goalie takes over and you can't prevent that. If we play like that every night, I like our chances."

Northeastern moved within two points of Boston University in the Hockey East standings, picking up a point on the Terriers with the tie. The Huskies stand at 2-10-4 in Hockey East (7-13-5 overall) for eight points in the HEA standings. BU lost to Providence, 2-0, on Friday night and now stands at 4-9-2 in Hockey East games for 10 points.

"That was a huge point and points are going to be precious down the road," Crowder said.

The Huskies and River Hawks went scoreless through both the third period and overtime to come out with the tie, although Northeastern outshot UML by a wide margin.

Northeastern dominated play in the second period, firing 23 shots at UMass Lowell netminder Chris Davidson. However, Davidson stood on his head, making 22 saves and the Huskies came out of the second stanza with only one goal for a 1-1 tie heading into the third. The River Hawks only managed three shots in the period.

With less than two minutes remaining in the second period, sophomore Mike Morris pressured a UML defender deep in the River Hawk zone and managed to poke check the puck away from him. Junior Jason Guerriero picked up the loose puck and fired a crisp pass in front of the net to sophomore Brian Swiniarski, who wristed a high shot off Davidson's glove and into the net at the 18:28 mark.

UMass Lowell's Rene Gauthier got a power-play goal past Husky goalie Keni Gibson's stick-side at 8:04 in the first period. He took a pass from River Hawk captain Danny O'Brien and rocketed a shot inside the far post from the right circle.

In the first minute of action, Gibson stopped Brad King on a breakaway. King took a blueline-to-blueline pass from Cleve Kinley that caught the Husky-defense off-guard and skated in uncontested on Gibson, who stood his ground and turned away a backhander.

"Keni made some huge saves in the first period to put us in a good position for the rest of the game," Crowder said.
