Maine scored two third-period goals to beat Northeastern 3-1 in Hockey East action in front of 2154 fans at Matthews Arena Friday night.

"We're playing good hockey," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder. "My only problem is that if we generate over 30 shots on net, we need to produce more than one goal."

Husky goalie Keni Gibson made 31 saves, including 13 in the first period, as the Huskies fell to 8-14-6 overall and 2-11-4 in Hockey East. The third-ranked Black Bears, who were led by Frank Doyle's 30 stops, improved to 21-6-2 and 12-4-1. The teams have a rematch on Saturday night at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.

"I though Keni was tremendous," Crowder said. "We' could've been down three goals in the first period, but he came up with some huge saves."

The teams entered the third period knotted at 1. Maine's Jeff Mushaluk netted the game winner on what appeared to be a deflection off Luciano Aquino at 3:26. However, Mushaluk was credited with the goal and Derek Damon was given an assist.

At 5:33 in the third period, Maine's Colin Shields broke through the Husky defense and had a point-blank shot but Gibson made the save, keeping the score at 2-1.

The Black Bears added a goal 9:15 into the third period. Todd Jackson skated through the Husky defense and sent a crisp pass to Greg Moore in front of the goal for a one-timer.

In the second period, Maine's Mike Hamilton gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead at 5:39 with a power-play tally. A crowd of players piled into the crease. Gibson was knocked down by a Maine player and held to the ice, while Hamilton put the puck into the goal.

The Huskies evened the score on a beautiful two-man breakaway at 7:45 in the second period. NU sophomore Mike Morris stole the puck from a Maine player at the Black Bear blue line and skated in on Doyle uncontested from the right wing with Jason Guerriero in tow. Morris faked a shot and slid pass to Guerriero, who buried to tie the game at 1.

NU couldn't convert on any of its six power-play opportunities, including a 1:32 5-on-3 situation. Meanwhile, Maine converted 1-of-4. The Huskies and Black Bears battled to a scoreless tie in first period. At 12:45 in the first period, Black Bear winger Dustin Penner broke away and fired an up-close blast, but Gibson made a spectacular save to deny the score.

Gibson made another great save at 16:15 in the first frame. During a Maine power play, Black Bear defenseman Prestin Ryan drifted across the crease from right-to-left and unleashed a quick wrister, but Gibson denied him with a sliding save.
