| 2003-04 Schedule/Results Merrimack 4, Northeastern 1
Northeastern couldn’t overcome a 4-0 third-period deficit, losing a 4-1 decision in Hockey East action before 2752 fans at Lawler Arena Friday night. The Huskies fall to 8-15-6 overall and 2-12-5 in Hockey East play. The Warriors increase their unbeaten streak to three games, while improving to 11-16-4 and 6-12-4. "Obviously it’s a very disappointing loss," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We have fought back from a bad start to the season to get us into position to control our own destiny and we couldn’t get the job done." With the Huskies trailing 4-0 in the third period, sophomore Mike Morris netted his eighth goal of the season on a nifty backhander with a man-advantage at 5:48. Morris took a pass from Eric Ortlip along the right boards, skated around a defender and across the crease. MC netminder Jim Healy (31 Saves) went down as Morris was at the left post and the right-winger lobbed a backhand shot over Healy. After two periods of play, NU goalie Keni Gibson (16 saves) was replaced by sophomore Tim Heneroty, which ended Gibson’s run of 24 straight games in net. Freshman Adam Geragosian was the last netminder to see time between the pipes other than Gibson Nov. 1, 2003 in a 5-2 loss to UMass Lowell. Heneroty played flawlessly over the final 20 minutes, making nine saves. "There was nothing wrong with the way Keni was playing," Crowder said. "The team needed a jolt." The Huskies are now 0-9-3 when playing on Friday night and 1-9-1 on the road. NU scored its first power-play goal since Jan. 24, which was the last time the Huskies visited Merrimack and resulted in a 3-2 win. However, this time NU went 1-for-7 with a man-advantage against Hockey East’s second-best penalty-kill unit. On Jan. 24, the Huskies went 2-for-4. Northeastern killed all five Merrimack power plays. The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Eric Pedersen wristed a shot over Gibson’s right shoulder at 11:34 of the first. Brent Gough had hit post on a shot and Marco Rosa tipped the puck back to Pedersen in the slot for the finish. Merrimack went up 2-0 with 40 seconds remaining in the first period. Matt Johnson skated around the back of the NU goal and threw a pass in front of the crease. The puck deflected off Ray Ortiz skate and into the goal at the 19:20 mark. The Huskies held the Warriors without a shot for the first 6:05 of the game, but by the end of the first 20 minutes shots were even at 7. At 8:21 of the second period, Gough picked up a loose puck in the corner and fired a centering pass to Rosa, who wasted little time going top shelf over Gibson’s left shoulder to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage. Gough scored a shorthanded breakaway to give Merrimack a 4-0 cushion with 10:08 left in the second period. Gough skated in uncontested after picking up the puck at the MC blue line. He beat Gibson with a backhander inside the right post. The Huskies failed to convert on any of their five power-play opportunities in the second period, including a 56-second two-man advantage at the end of the second stanza. The best NU scoring opportunity was on the 5-on-3, when Morris hit the post on a one-timer off a cross-crease pass from Jason Guerriero with 1:22 before the second intermission.
