| 2003-04 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Boston University 2 (OT)
Both Northeastern and Boston University entered last night's game in desperate need of a victory with Hockey East tournament implications on the line and the teams played the part, skating to a thrilling 2-2 tie in front of 2591 spectators at Matthews Arena Friday night. "It was a good battle and both teams had a couple of bounces go their way," said NU goalie Keni Gibson, who stopped 36 saves. "It evened out in the end. We'll come back and do it again tomorrow." The game peeked in the extra session with both teams getting quality scoring chances in end-to-end action. Gibson turned away a flury of three shots to open overtime, but the Huskies responded by peppering BU netminder Sean Fields (30 saves) with eight shots total. NU's best scoring opportunity came with 47 seconds left. Junior Jason Guerriero raced into the BU zone with the puck and left a drop pass for junior defenseman Donny Grover, who snapped off a wrister toward the upper-right hand corner that Fields snagged out of the air. On the ensuing play, BU's Bryan Miller and Mark Mullen skated in on Gibson on a 2-on-1. Mullen slipped a pass to Miller for a backhander that Gibson thwarted with his stick with 30 seconds left. "We had some great chances and they had some great chances," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "But, it ended in a tie and I don't think either team liked the outcome. We can't afford to give up too many more points right now." With the tie, the Huskies tied the single-season school record for ties in a season with their seventh on the year and the Terriers broke their single-season record with their eighth of the 2003-04 campaign. Coincidentally, it was the first tie in the series between the schools since Nov. 13, 1999 (4-4) and only the third tie in 182 meetings. NU (8-16-7, 2-13-6 HEA) stayed in playoff contention with the tie. The Huskies trail the Terriers (9-14-8, 5-12-4) by four points in the standings with three games remaining for both teams in the regular season. BU could have clinched the final playoff spot with a victory last night and still can with a win in Saturday night's rematch at Walter Brown Arena. NU wraps up next weekend with Massachusetts, while BU finishes with New Hampshire. "It's do or die and I hope we'll do it," Gibson said. "I have a good feeling we'll come out flying tomorrow." After a scoreless, up-and-down first period in which BU outshot NU, 13-7, the intensity and speed gradually built up. In the second period, Husky senior Eric Ortlip lit the lamp, beating Fields with crisp shot from the right slot over his left shoulder. Guerriero had dug the puck out from the boards and slid a pass to Ortlip for his eighth power-play goal of the season at 6:13. The Terriers answered with a goal from Brian McConnell on a 3-on-1 odd-man rush at 11:21 of the second. Bryan Miller and Ryan Whitney assisted on the play. In the final minutes of the second period, junior Jared Mudryk found the back of the net, beating Fields with a one-timer in front of the goal. Ortlip won a face off in the BU zone and knocked the puck to Mudryk for his sixth goal of year with 1:29 left before second intermission. BU bounced back early in the third period with a heads-up goal by David Van der Gulik. Kevin Schaeffer had a shot blocked by Gibson and the goalie tried to cover it up. However, the puck wasn't underneath him and Van der Gulik spotted the puck sitting in the crease and skated in uncontested and banged it home to draw the teams even at 1:35 of the third. At the end of 65 minutes of play, BU outshot NU, 38-32. The Huskies went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed all three Terrier man-advantages. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
