Junior goalie Keni Gibson turned away 38 saves and classmate Jason Guerriero scored twice, as the Huskies staved off elimination and remained in the hunt for the eighth and final Hockey East playoff spot with a 4-0 blanking of Massachusetts at Matthews Arena. "I thought we came out great and Jason (Guerriero) really got us going," Gibson said. "The guys did a great job clearing the puck and blocking shots and I was able to see the puck well. When I'm seeing the puck and they guys are playing well in front of me I think we've got a pretty good shot." Northeastern is now 10-16-7 overall and 4-13-6 in Hockey East play. The Huskies trail Boston University by one point in the standings with both teams having one game remaining. NU travels to Amherst tomorrow, while the Terriers travel to Durham to take on New Hampshire. The Huskies need a victory and a BU loss or tie to earn the final berth. The Minutemen drop to 16-10-6 and 12-8-3 and remain one point ahead of UNH for the third seed. Gibson's shutout was his fifth of the season and sixth of his career. The goalie has started his 28th straight game. Guerriero had his second straight two-goal outing and seventh of his career, as he potted his 15th and 16th of the year. Guerriero is now just two points shy of 100 (32-66-98) and would become the first junior to reach the century mark since Jordon Shields, who had 50 goals and 73 assists in his first three seasons. The Huskies are 21-3-2 all-time against UMass at Matthews Arena and 8-2-2 at home under head coach Bruce Crowder against the Minutemen. The NU victory was the first Friday night win all season (1-9-5). Both Guerriero's scores came in the first 20 minutes. With NU on a power play, sophomore Mike Morris intercepted a UMass clearing attempt in the Minutemen zone, deked a defender and skated toward the goal. He drew a defenseman and UMass goalie Gabe Winer's attention, before sliding the puck to Guerriero at the lower left circle. Guerriero didnt' waste any time putting the puck between the left post and Winer's pads for the game winner at 12:32. A little over two minutes later, freshman Steve Birnstill hit Morris in the slot. Morris walked through the defense again toward the goal and slipped a pass to Guerriero, who one-timed the puck into the open goal at 14:51 of the first period. The Minutemen came out strong in the second period, outshooting the Huskies, 17-11, but Gibson didn't falter. And, as the second intermission neared, junior defenseman Tim Judy faked a shot and skated around the defender who took the ice in hopes of blocking a shot. Judy skated near the right post and snuck a perfect pass across the goal mouth to senior Trevor Reschny for the tap in. with 1:14 left in the period. Freshman Yale Lewis put the finishing touches on the win with a nifty breakaway goal with 4:18 left in the game. Freshman Bryan Esner sent a quick outlet pass from the Husky blue line to freshman Aaron Moore past center ice. Moore dove to control the puck and knock it to Lewis, who was racing down the ice. Lewis skated in on UMass goalie Gabe Winer (22 saves) and beat him with a backhander for his fifth goal of the season. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
