| 2003-04 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Providence 2
Northeastern grabbed a 2-0 lead, but 15th-ranked Providence scored two late second-period goals to tie the game, 2-2, and that’s how it ended Friday night in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena. "Hockey East is a tough league to get points in, and we had a good opportunity tonight with a two-zip lead," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "But overall this was our best game of the year. We just have to find ways to score goals. We're going to be OK." Sophomore forward Brian Swiniarski gave NU (0-5-2 overall, 0-3-1 Hockey East) a 1-0 lead with an unassisted tally at 14:12 of the first period. He grabbed the puck out of the air at the blue line, skated in and slid a low shot past Providence goalie Bobby Goepfert (32 saves). It was Swiniarski’s team-leading fifth goal of the season, and he extended his goal-scoring streak to three games. Swiniarski assisted on the Huskies’ second goal of the game, scored by senior forward Eric Ortlip at 6:23 of the second. After Swiniarski won a face-off in the right circle, Ortlip gathered the puck and shot it, but Goepfert made the initial save. Ortlip stuck with the play and put home the rebound for his third goal of the season. The assist was Swiniarski’s first of the year. Peter Zingoni put Providence (5-2-2, 1-2-2) on the board at 14:41 of the second with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. He took a pass from Jonathan Goodwin at the center of the blue line, skated in all alone and beat junior goalie Keni Gibson (25 saves) five hole. Just over three minutes later, the Friars’ Chris Chaput passed the puck out front just as he was skating behind NU’s net. It wound up on the stick of a charging Torry Gajda, who put it over Gibson’s right shoulder to tie it at 2-2. The Huskies survived a scare in overtime. With just over two minutes gone, PC’s Eric Lundberg took a slapper from just inside the blue line. Gibson made the save, but the puck trickled behind him and would have gone in if freshman defenseman Brian Deeth did not swoop in and clear it. "This was our best game of the year by far. It was my best game, too," said Gibson. "It's good to get a game like that under my belt." The Huskies out-shot the Friars, 34-27, in the game, including a 15-9 second-period advantage. NU went 0-for-3 with a man-advantage, while PC was 0-for-1 on the power play. Northeastern travels to Orono, Maine on Friday, Nov. 14 to play No. 1 Maine at 7 p.m. Providence College (5-2-2) vs. Northeastern (0-5-2)
