Senior captain Brian Tudrick scored his first career shorthanded goal with 3:52 in regulation to cut the NU deficit to 3-2, but fourth-ranked Maine responded with two goals, including an empty netter as time expired, for a 5-2 Hockey East victory at Alfond Arena in Orono Friday night.
The Huskies fall to 0-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in conference play, while the Black Bears improve to 8-2-0 and 3-2-0.
After a scoreless first period in which NU outshot Maine, 8-7, Luciano Aquino put the Black Bears ahead with 5:48 left in the second stanza. In the second period, Husky goalie Keni Gibson made 14 of his 27 saves, as Maine turned the tide, outshooting Northeastern, 15-6.
Tom Zabkowicz gave Maine a 2-0 advantage at 4:45 of the third, but the Huskies answered with a power-play goal from junior Jason Guerriero at 7:11 to halve the NU deficit. Junior Tim Judy sent the puck from the center of the blueline to Mike Morris in the far corner. Morris lofted a pass through the slot onto the stick of Guerriero, who blasted a shot past Jimmy Howard for his third goal of the season.
Aquino scored his second goal of the game for a 3-1 Maine lead with 6:25 remaining. Tudrick brought the Huskies within striking distance with his shorthanded tally at 16:08, but Maine's Mike Lundin scored less than two minutes later to seal the victory.
Todd Jackson added an empty-net goal for the Black Bears at 19:59.
"I thought we played well against a good team," Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder said. "It was 3-2 with less than four minutes left in the game. Keni (Gibson) played great. A few of their goals seemed to have eyes on them, and our shots seemed to find the side of the net and the post. But, we'll get back to work Monday and go from here."
Both squads went 1-for-4 on the man-advantage. Maine outshot NU, 32-21, for the game.
