| 2004 Schedule/Results Northeastern 4, Michigan 2
Northeastern scored a huge upset victory over top-ranked Michigan, 4-2, on Friday in Dayton, Ohio. Jason Guerriero scored a goal and assisted on two, surpassing 100 points for his collegiate career. Netminder Keni Gibson made 31 saves. The game was part of the Lefty McFadden Invitational, hosted by Miami University (Ohio). Michigan controlled the game early but the Huskies turned the tide midway through the second period. Down 2-1, freshman Josh Robertson scored his first career goal, on a power-play, when he deflected a Brian Swiniarski shot past Michigan goalie Al Montoya. Montoya is considered one of the top goalies in the nation and was selected fifth overall in the NHL Draft last season. That tied the score, 2-2, at 9:31 in the second period. Guerriero then scored the game-winning goal on a power-play at 15:59 in the second period, giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead over the Wolverines on an assist by Mike Morris. Gibson played an excellent game in net. In addition to his 31 saves, Gibson kept Michigan at bay in seven of eight Wolverine power-plays. Michigan pulled its goalie in the final minute of the game but Gibson stuffed the Blue. Montoya finished the game with 30 saves. The Huskies added an insurance goal with less than a minute left when Donny Grover scored with assists from Ortiz and Guerriero at 19:03 in the third. Down 1-0, Ortiz got the Huskies on the board 49 seconds into the second period. He scored with an assist from Guerriero, who hit the century-mark in career points on the play. Michigan's Milan Gajic scored the first goal of the game 10:11 into the first period. Following Ortiz's goal in the second period, David Moss gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead 5:37 into the second. But the Huskies dominated from there on and took home the win. The season-opening victory over the top-ranked Wolverines is a stark contrast compared to last season, when it took NU until its 12th game to notch a victory. The Huskies opened the 2003-04 season 0-9-2 and finished with an 11-16-7 overall record. The Huskies begin the season with a victory for the first time since the 2000-01 season, when the beat St. Lawrence, 4-3, at Matthews Arena. Friday night's victory was the sixth upset of a No. 1 team since head coach Bruce Crowder took the helm in the 1996-97 season. Crowder, in his ninth season with the Huskies, is 6-4-4 against top-ranked teams. NU is now 1-3 all-time against Michigan, though the teams last played in 1964. The Huskies play Miami on Saturday at the Nutter Center in the final game of the Lefty McFadden Invitational at 7:30 p.m. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
