The Huskies took their first Hockey East loss of the season as they fell to sixth-ranked New Hampshire on Friday night at the Wittemore Center in Durham, N.H. The Huskies fall to 5-4-1 on the season and 2-1 in Hockey East while New Hampshire improves to 7-3-1 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The Huskies will try to split the series as they host New Hampshire on Saturday night at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.
Tim Judy came up with his first goal of the season to cut New Hampshire's lead to 4-3 but the Huskies came up empty thereafter. Judy scored 4:26 in the third with assists from Joe Santilli and Jason Guerriero.
New Hampshire got unanswered goals by Preston Callander goal at 17:06 in the second period and Daniel Winnik at 2:09 in the third to take a 4-2 lead withy under 18:00 to go. Winnik's goal proved to be the game-winner.
The Huskies got on the board, when Bryan Cirullo scored from the middle at 18:11. He took a pass from Judy and slapped it over UNH goalie Jeff Pietrasiak's left shoulder for the score. It was Cirullo's second goal of the season and made it 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
New Hampshire took a 2-1 lead when Preston Callander scored a power-play goal on a feed from Brett Hemingway at 3:00 in the second period.
The Huskies came back with their second goal of the game on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Bryan Esner took the puck down the ice and dished to Jared Mudryk on the right side and Mudryk netted the goal at 8:10 in the second period. Mudryk's fourth goal of the season made it 2-2. Just prior, New Hampshire's Justin Aikins had a breakaway and took a wide-open shot but Gibson made the save.
New Hampshire scored first on a shorthanded goal by Mike Radja at 13:04 in the first period. It was the first short-handed goal allowed by Northeastern this season. Josh Ciocco won a face-off and passed to Radja, who beat the NU defense down the ice and scored.
