The Huskies trailed Boston College by just one goal heading into the third period but couldn't rally as they lost, 4-1, to the Eagles before 3,709 fans at Matthews Arena. Senior Donny Grover notched his second goal of the season and goalie Keni Gibson made 34 saves. BC was led by Stephen Gionta, who had a goal and an assist, and goalie Cory Schneider, who made 29 saves.
"For the most part we played alright, but BC was probably the best team we have faced all season," said NU head coach Bruce Crowder. "We played well in the third but turned it over twice."
The Huskies fall to 6-6-1 on the season and 3-3-0 in Hockey East play while the Eagles improve ot 6-2-2 and 3-0-2.
Down 2-0, Grover scored at 19:07 in the second period. He took a pass from Mike Morris and charged Schneider, edging the puck past the goalie. Morris returned to the Husky lineup after missing the past four games with an injury.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Ryan Murphy and Dave Spina. Murphy netted the first score of the game from the right side at 10:58 in the first. Spina made it 2-0 at 12:32 when he scored right in front of Gibson.
Boston College iced it in the third period when Brian Boyle scored 3:31 into it. Gionta scored an insurance goal at 7:26 in the third to make it 4-1.
Northeastern held Boston College scoreless on three power-plays, improving on their .753 penalty-kill entering the game. But the Huskies went 0-6 on power-play opportunities. BC had the league's third-best penalty-kill percentage (.869) entering the game. BC outshot NU 38-30.
The Huskies travel to Burlington, Vt. for a matchup with Vermont next Saturday at 7 p.m.
