Jimmy Russo scored his first collegiate goal and Brian Swiniarski added one as Northeastern tied UMass Lowell, 2-2, on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Husky goalie Keni Gibson held off a last minute charge by UML's Cleve Kinley to keep it even and get the Huskies a Hockey East point. UMass Lowell's Elias Godoy scored both RiverHawk goals.

"We all know how precious points are in this league," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "Sometimes they can slip through your fingers and we'll take it. Of course the 'W' would have been better but through over six periods this weekend I liked the way the team played."

With the tie, Northeastern is 6-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 in Hockey East play to close out 2004. UMass Lowell is 8-5-2 and 0-5-2.

With the Huskies down, 1-0, Russo took a long pass from Aaron Moore and was wide open. Russo skated down the ice and beat Lowell goalie Peter Vetri for the score at 12:10 in the first period. Steve Birnstill got the puck to Moore.

The Huskies took a 2-1 lead when Swiniarski redirected a Jon Awe shot past Vetri on the right side at 15:31 in the first.

UMass Lowell capitalized on a Husky turnover to tie the game in the second period. Godoy fired a shot from the right boards that went off a Husky defender and into the net.

The Huskies nearly took the lead eight minutes into the third period when Bryan Esner shot the puck off the pipes. Both teams were changing lines and Esner got the puck all alone and took it in on the left side but the puck didn't bounce the right way.

UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead 8:01 into the game when Godoy took a pass from Mark Pandolfo from way out on the right side and got it past Gibson.

Vetri made 34 saves in the game. Northeastern outshot UML, 36-34 and went 0-4 on power-plays while Lowell went 1-3.

The Huskies head into Christmas break with seven Hockey East points, six more than they had at this point last year. Northeastern went 2-9-2 overall and 0-7-1 in league play before Christmas last season.

Northeastern is back in action Jan. 1-2 when it travels to Colorado for the Denver Cup at Denver University's Magness Arena. NU plays Colgate in the first round of the tournament and takes on Air Force or Denver in the second round.
