| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 5, Colgate 1
The Huskies dominated Colgate with a 5-1 victory behind two-goal games from both Jason Guerriero and Brian Swiniarski to advance to the final of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup on Saturday at Denver's Magness Arena. Guerriero and Donny Grover each had two assists. Northeastern improved to 7-8-2 while Colgate fell to 12-5. Northeastern notched its first win in five games, since it beat Merrimack, 5-1, Nov. 23. With the score tied at 1-1 in the second period, Swiniarski took a pass from Guerriero and took a shot from the near left side that Colgate goalie Steve Silverthorn saved. Swiniarski then knocked in his own rebound to make it 2-1 at 8:08 in the second. The goal proved to be the game-winner. Swiniarski scored a power-play goal just over five minutes later to give the Huskies a two-goal cushion. Guerriero passed to Brian Deeth, who fed the puck to Swiniarksi on the right side. Swiniarski beat Silverthorn to make it 3-1 at 13:26 in the second period. The goal was Swiniarksi's team-leading ninth of the season. Colgate couldn't stop the bleeding in the third period as the Huskies scored two goals in just over two minutes in the third period. With Colgate on a power-play, Tim Judy forced a turnover and got Mike Morris the puck. Morris took it down the right side, then passed to Guerriero on the right side and Guerriero beat Silverthorn cleanly to make it 4-1 at 4:23 in the third period. It was Northeastern's second short-handed goal of the season. The Huskies added another insurance goal when Brian Deeth netted his first of the season. Ray Ortiz came out from behind the net and passed the puck to Deeth, who got it past Silverthorn. Colgate coach Don Vaughn then pulled Silverthorn in favor of freshman Mark Dekanich, who finished the game. Guerriero opened up the scoring with a power-play goal 13:32 into the first period. Guerriero skated out to the blueline took a low shot that sailed by Silverthorn. Donny Grover and Steve Birnstill got assists on the play. The Huskies dominated play in the first, outshooting the Raiders, 13-5, and holding them scoreless on a pair of power-plays. Mike Morris had two great scoring opportunities that were both broken up by Silverthorn. The Raiders came out shooting in the second period and evened the score on a power-play. Jon Smyth took a shot that Keni Gibson saved, then Tyler Burton found open net on Gibson's right side and netted the goal. The score wasn't tied for long, however, as Swiniarski's two goals made it 3-1 at the end of the second. Guerriero broke out of a minor slump with his three-point effort. He had no goals and just one assist over the past four games. The Huskies' five goals were the most since they notched five against Merrimack Nov. 23. The Huskies take on the winner of the Air Force/Denver game at 7 p.m. Mountain time on Sunday at Magness Arena.
