Denver took an early lead and the Huskies couldn't catch up as Northeastern fell 4-0 in the final of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena on Saturday. Husky goalie Keni Gibson made 27 saves. The seventh-ranked Pioneers won their fifth-straight Denver Cup title.

Forward Jason Guerriero and defenseman Brian Deeth were named to the Wells Fargo Denver Cup All-Tournament team. Guerriero had two goals and two assists against Colgate while Deeth had a goal and an assist.

The Huskies fell to 7-9-2 on the season while defending national champ Denver improved to 13-5-1. Northeastern topped Colgate, 5-1, on Saturday to advance to the final. Denver is 8-1 at Magness Arena this season.

Denver goalie Peter Mannino made 37 saves to record the shutout. It was the second time this season that the Huskies were shut out.

DU defenseman Matt Carle gave the Pioneers the lead 3:03 into the game. He got the feed from Gabe Gauthier and shot the puck past Gibson and into the net.

Despite the goal, Gibson played well in the first, making key saves and coming out of the net twice to break up plays. The Huskies couldn't get on the board in the first period, though they set up some good scoring chances. Both teams came up empty on power-plays in the first.

Denver came out shooting in the second and notched a pair of goals in the first half of the period. Paul Stastny stole the puck in the Husky zone and got a wide open goal at 4:53. Gabe Gauthier gave Denver a 3-0 lead at 9:26 when he netted a power-play goal. Gauthier took a pass from Stastny on the right side of the crease and got a shot past Gibson.

The Huskies put the pressure on at the end of the second period but Mannino was an iron curtain in front of the Denver net. Jimmy Russo took a rocket shot in a 2-on-1 with six minutes left but Mannino came up with the save. Less than a minute later, Guerriero took a shot from right in from that Mannino saved.

Denver upped its lead to 4-0 before the end of the second on a tough-luck play for the Huskies. Gibson went to clear a Brett Skinner shot and was dragged behind the net by DU's Jussi Halme. With the net wide open, Ryan Dingle took a pass from Luke Fulghum and easily netted the goal at 18:51.

The teams went scoreless in the third period. The Huskies return to action when they host Boston University Jan. 7. The Hockey East contest will be aired live on NESN.
