Aaron Moore scored his first goal of the season but the Huskies couldn't hold off a surging 11th-ranked Boston University as they fell, 3-1, to the Terriers on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Goalie Keni Gibson played a spectacular game in net and came away with 30 saves.
"I thought the big difference was that we dominated so much in the first period and only got one goal out of it," said Husky head coach Bruce Crowder. "In periods two and three they came back on us and we didn't give ourselves enough distance."
The Huskies fell to 7-10-2 overall and 3-5-1 in Hockey East while Boston University upped its league-leading record to 13-7-0 overall and 9-1-0 in conference play.
Moore gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 19:35 in the first period with assists from Brian Deeth and Yale Lewis. NU had applied pressure to BU goaltender John Curry, outshooting the Terriers 16-5 in the period but Moore was the only Husky to get a puck by him.
It was a physical first period and NU's Brian Deeth was sent to the box while Tom Morrow and Dan McGoff were called on penalties for BU at 12:46. That gave NU a 4-on-3 advantage but the Huskies couldn't capitalize.
BU came out strong in the second period and capitalized on a Jason Guerriero interference penalty at 11:31. With a 5-4 advantage, Kenny Roach took a pass from Dan Sprang and knotted the score at 1-1 at 13:12.
The third period began with the two teams matching each other shot for shot. The momentum began to shift to BU however, and at 10:23 the Terriers found themselves up 2-1 after a rebound-goal by senior Matt Radoslovich (from Spang and Brian Ewing). It began when Ewing flipped a pass to Spang, who put a shot on goal. Radoslovich banged home the rebound to give the Terriers their first lead. It proved to be the difference maker.
NU's Gibson came out of the net with just over 30 seconds remaining but BU was the team that capitalized as sophomore Kevin Schaeffer rifled home an empty-net goal to give the Terriers a 3-1 victory over NU.
The Huskies travel to UMass Lowell tomorrow for a 7 p.m. bout with the River Hawks. The game will be carried live on CN8 as well as on Huskies Radio, WJIB 740 AM.
